About this concert
Great Southern Nights presents Hannah Macklin live!
Fresh off the back of releasing her debut full-length album, the conceptual cosmic work “MU” and following a rebrand of a swathe of past releases (encompassing former aliases MKO and MKO Sun), the enigmatic Hannah Macklin brings her 5-piece band (featuring Brandon Mamata — guitar, Peta Wilson — keys, Lachlan Symons — bass and Sam Mitchell — drums) to the Brunswick Picture House to rock a show!
Hannah sings messages of gratitude and wonderment for the all expressed from both inner and outer worlds, woven with a kooky and energetic blend of soul, nu-jazz and punk. Joining the bill is Meanjin/Gimuy singer-songwriter KALILA.
Great Southern Nights 2024 will take place from 8–24 March 2024 featuring more than 300 gigs across 17 nights throughout Sydney’s inner city and Western Sydney, as well as shows in seven key music communities across NSW, including Tamworth, Wagga, Newcastle, Wollongong and the Northern Rivers.

Hannah Macklin Biography
Hannah Macklin is a multifaceted and highly accomplished artist (vocalist, writer, performer) and producer/creative director who has been creating and performing original music and video, as well as educating and collaborating with a remarkable array of people for over a decade. Winner of the 2016 Grant McLennan Fellowship, Hannah spent 3 months in NYC in 2017 (a city she’d visited twice prior) on an artistic pilgrimage, collaborating with Ray Angry (The Roots) and members of Solange’s band.
She has supported well known Australian band Hiatus Kaiyote (and worked with several of its members), Peaches (USA), Ibeyi (USA), Katie Noonan, Cody ChesnuTT and Fatima (UK). She has also recorded session vocals for Regurgitator, Emma Donovan, BIGYUKI (USA/Japan), Jaala, Laneous, Sampology, Allysha Joy, Barney McAll, Tom Thum and Paul Mac.
Hannah has used several aliases for her original projects, performances, and releases, including “MKO” and “MKO Sun”, (Meanjin, 2012-2016), “Bastard Amber” (Naarm, 2017-2019) and “Laik” (Meanjin, 2019-2021). All releases have now been re-branded under Hannah Macklin.
Hannah advocates for diversity and dreaming and seeks to keep striving towards these as constants in her work. She is as passionate about equality and healing as she is about creation. A graduate of QLD Conservatorium of Music (Jazz Voice), her vocal stylings are greatly influenced by black music and she likes to remain open to discussion about this; however Hannah’s taste extends across pop, rock, electronica and alternative styles. She also delves into researching and transcribing traditional music from cultures outside of Australia.
Hannah currently facilitates two vocal ensembles at the QLD Conservatorium of Music as well as running her own private vocal practice, “Painted Tongue Studio”. Hannah has performed at the Sydney Opera House, The Hordern Pavilion (Sydney - for Mardi Gras
