About this concert
Concert fundraiser next Thursday night at Tyrant Studios to support my friend Naser from Gaza! Naser is a Canadian citizen originally from Gaza, and is in urgent need of financial assistance to evacuate his family from Gaza safely. His father needed heart surgery recently under the siege, and with all of the hospitals unusable, he was treated in a clinic with very little of the necessary equipment needed. His father has since fallen ill due to infection since losing their family home and needs to leave Gaza immediately (as most people do because they are experiencing unthinkable violence, a major health crisis and have no food). Naser has been working tirelessly for months to evacuate his family, speaking to every political leader he can, writing letters and advocating, all while being a new dad and surviving in one of the most expensive cities in the world. The rules are oppressively discriminatory towards Palestinians in Canada in contrast to other immigration policies and his family should be here with us today. The next best thing we can do is help Naser hire a lawyer to advocate and support him through this process. Naser is very possibly the sweetest and most vibrant person I’ve ever met and we are so grateful to be able to help him in some small way during this unthinkably devastating time. The night will be one to remember as we bring our beautiful friend and his family all the love and support we can muster during this challenging time. If you cannot make the show but would like to donate, please donate here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/legal-fees-for-naser and we will include it in our donations raised. Tickets will be $20 cash at the door. There will be a cash donation box at the event, with goodies and merch by donation as well. Presentations and Music will begin at 8:30pm. Show up early to get a seat! The venue fills up fast. *Please note - the is on the third floor of an old heritage building and has unfortunately not been adapted to accommodate accessibility needs. There are three short flights of stairs (roughly 7 steps each). Show Itinerary: Daniel will start us off with a little info on this historic venue that has hosted the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, and Oscar Peterson. Then our friend Naser will kick things off with an important presentation. Then… the music begins ❤️ Two of my favourite musical acts in this city including multi-disciplinary artist and singer-songwriter Miguel Maravilla, whose music effortlessly dismantles the chronology of time with upbeat songs about love, heartbreak, and resistance inspired by Filipino revolutionaries of yore who remain incredibly relevant to this day. // AND // @streamspoetryproject a dynamic improvisatory duo comprised of the warm, lyrically powered vocals of Emma Postl and the introspective guitar stylings of Thomas Hoeller. Then @EmilyBest and her band (bassist Rob Thomson and drummer Max Ley) will hop onstage for a full set of music. Show details: Where: Tyrant Studios (1019 Seymour street, above Penthouse stripclub - just cut the line and say you’re there for “the jazz” then head on upstairs). When: next Thursday Feb 15, doors open at 8pm, presentations and music begin at 8:30pm Tickets: they are $20 cash at the door (get there early to get in). Bring cash for donations and merch. Or you can also donate online via our gofundme link - in my bio. Make sure to stop at the bar in the back of house and support the venue as well. Tyrant is one of Vancouver’s most special venues. Daniel does so much to keep music alive in this city and deserves our support too! Bring homemade cards, expressions of love and solidarity with our friends in P4lestine who are fighting for their lives, and please open your big hearts and have those cute lil’ ears ready to listen to some of the best music this city has to offer. Let’s make it a night to remember! ❤️

Emily Best Biography

Emily Best (they/she) is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who resides in the occupied Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish). Stó:lō and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations of so-called Vancouver B.C. Her unique orchestration and arrangements paired with distinctive melodies weave a patchwork of pop, rock, and folk, while melding the idiosyncratic leanings of jazz with the familiar nostalgia of southern country-soul. Both her debut album "A Storm Came Through" (2020) and upcoming sophomore album "Light Up the Dawn" are produced, written and arranged entirely by Best, and feature prominent musicians within the Canadian music scene.

The Permanent Rain Press described her debut album “A Storm Came Through” as “a marvellous musical medley that combines old-time Americana, contemporary jazz, avant-pop and orchestral folk. It’s unlike anything I’ve heard before.”

Noted as also having “the same appeal as cursive writing—elegant and rare” by The Permanent Rain Press, Best’s “lush and soulful” composition and unique production style have classified her as “an artist who could be as comfortable on a folk festival stage as a jazz gig” by the The Vancouver Sun.
