About this concert
"Jun Iida reaches the summit! ...Evergreen is all about balance—everything is perfectly calibrated, beautiful, intelligent, and one simply allows oneself to be carried away...we are certainly only at the beginning of delightful surprises." -PARIS MOVE Trumpeter Jun Iida's warm, inviting tone, astute composition choices and his sublime sense of melody lead the way on his debut recording. After five years in Los Angeles and three in Seattle, Evergreen memorializes the musical focus and development that transpired over those years, as he moves on to new adventures in New York. Recorded in Los Angeles, Jun brought together L.A. friends Josh Nelson on piano, guitarist Masami Kuroki and bassist Jonathan Richards, along with the dynamic Seattle drummer Xavier Lecouturier. New York vocalist Aubrey Johnson brilliantly adds to Jun's soaring melodies with her often wordless vocals, and sings in Japanese on a song from Jun's childhood, "Akatombo," and the J-pop anime song "Shiki no Uta," both in a nod to Jun's family heritage. Between the swinging "Gooey Butter Cake" and "Bellarosa," to the haunting "Theme from Spartacus," or the spacious title track, Jun shares a sparkling and compelling message that's sure to resonate.

Amazing evening! We heard Jun performing with Alex Dougdale a few months back at Jazz Vespers and I was impressed enough to pre-order his CD. When we heard he was playing at Seattle Jazz Fellowship, a venue we had been meaning to check out, we began looking forward to the evening, so much so that we were first in line when the doors opened! We had heard the Seattle Jazz Fellowship was small and we wanted to make sure we got in. Wow, what a charming, intimate venue for a fabulous evening with Jun and his very talented band! The second set totally blew us away. And he's genuinely nice as well - what a class act to get a hand written thank you on my invoice when I got my CD.

Jun Iida Biography

“Iida displays a modern approach that embraces Marquis Hill, as much as Lee Morgan.” Earshot Jazz

Trumpeter, composer, educator, and recording artist Jun Iida (Joon Ee-da) has quickly established himself as a highly sought after musician. A recording and performing artist, Iida has performed extensively throughout the U.S. at notable jazz clubs, theaters, and festivals with his sextet and as a sideman.

Originally from St. Louis, MO, Iida has lived in Seattle, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Los Angeles, and has recently relocated to New York City. Iida has internalized the different styles of music from each region, making his approach to composing and arranging appealing and unexpected with his subtle amalgamation of contemporary jazz, blues, pop, hip-hop, soul, and classical music.

The son of Japanese immigrants, Iida’s mother, a semi-professional koto (Japanese harp) player, had a profound influence on his love of music. Iida says, “My mother was always playing music around the house. She loved all types of music, especially classical, and I spent my formative years listening to Brahms, Tchaikovsky, and Mendelssohn. My mother wanted to make sure we didn’t lose our culture and language, so she also taught us Japanese folk and children’s songs. But I also listened to jazz, blues, soul, rock 'n' roll, and hip-hop, which were all prevalent in St. Louis when I was very young.”

Iida began studying the piano when he was five years old and subsequently started playing the trumpet when he was nine after listening to his mother’s Louis Armstrong album, Hello Dolly! Although Iida was mainly attracted to jazz when he was young, his interests encompassed a wide range of styles, and he performed in several classical orchestras and wind ensembles throughout his high school and college years. Iida went on to study classical music at the Cleveland Institute of Music and jazz at Case Western Reserve University, where he also studied aerospace engineering.

Iida’s debut album as leader, Evergreen, will be released in January 2024 on Origin Records.
