Reno McCarthy Biography
Reno McCarthy is as creative as he is prolific. Over the past four years, he has released two albums, two EPs, and several singles, garnering praise from listeners and critics alike. While McCarthy’s indie-rock tunes come to life on stage through his expressive vocals and guitar prowess, his remarkable talent truly shines in the studio. The producer and multi-instrumentalist expertly crafts intricate soundscapes and undeniably catchy arrangements, while his lyrics reveal a sense of anxiety oscillating between powerlessness and action.
With the youthful sparkle of his debut album Counterglow (2019), McCarthy quickly gained recognition for his strong songwriting and somewhat debonair quality as well as his electric live shows. Unexpected events led McCarthy to a surprise stopover. Following the loss of his father, the artist recorded a profoundly personal EP. Angels Watching Us Dance (2020) saw Reno at his most stripped-down and strikingly sensitive.
Met with critical acclaim and sold-out shows, Run Up River (2021) marked the artist and producer’s return to ambitious and powerful alternative pop. Gritty, timeless, and adventurous, his second full-length record is an unfiltered take on insecurity, frustration, and comfort. McCarthy returned with the EP Picture in Picture (2023), a trio of impressive alt-folk gems. Equally intimate and bold, the songs delve into existential themes of eco-anxiety and alienation, overflowing with colourful textures and heart-wrenching vocal performances.
The Montrealer now sets his sights on the release of his third full-length album, his very first French-language work.
