About this concert
The distinctive American songwriter, pianist and three-time Grammy Award winner Bruce Hornsby is joined by yMusic, the genre-leading contemporary classical ensemble, for a performance showcasing new collaborative compositions plus other favorites from Hornsby’s illustrious catalog. As a 13-time Grammy nominee and former Grateful Dead band member, singer-songwriter Bruce Hornsby has solidified his status as a highly sought-after collaborator. Enter the New York-based chamber ensemble yMusic, renowned for their collaborative projects with everyone from John Legend to Caroline Shaw. Now, Bruce Hornsby and yMusic join creative forces for a new collab: BrhyM. Based out of Williamsburg, Virginia, Bruce Hornsby first rose to national prominence with The Way It Is, his 1986 Grammy-winning debut album with The Range. The title track became the most-played song on American radio in 1987; Tupac Shakur's hit 1993 single "Changes" famously sampled "The Way It Is," setting the stage for many subsequent versions. Hornsby collaborated with Bonnie Raitt in 1991, playing on her iconic hit "I Can't Make You Love Me," and was a part-time member of the Grateful Dead from 1990 to 1992, performing over 100 concerts in America and Europe. Hornsby's own 23 albums have sold over 11 million copies worldwide. Founded in New York City in 2008, American chamber ensemble yMusic (Alex Sopp, flutes/voice; Hideaki Aomori, clarinets; CJ Camerieri, trumpet/horn; Rob Moose, violin; Nadia Sirota, viola; Gabriel Cabezas, cello) believes in presenting excellent, emotionally communicative music, regardless of style or idiom. Now in its 16th season, yMusic has a unique mission: to work on both sides of the classical/popular music divide, without sacrificing rigor, virtuosity, charisma or style. yMusic has lent their instantly-recognizable sound to commissions and projects by a dizzying array of artists, including Andrew Norman, Anohni, Missy Mazzoli, Paul Simon and more.

It was a truly wonderful performance. The pianist, Steven Osborne, was a delight to watch and hear perform - very talented. Same goes to the conductor, Kevin John Edusei - and what a style! It’s worth mentioning that his blazer was supremely epic. Bravo!
