About this concert
Featuring: Andria Antoniou on vocals Mario Bakuna on acoustic guitar and mouth trumpet 'Female Voices of Brazil' highlights the talent and charisma of some of the most influential female singers in Brazil. The Brazilian music scene flourished between the 1930s and 1980s; many musical styles and rhythms were born, different vocal styles emerged, and jazz and popular music influences infused the existing styles. From the 1930s 'Radio Era' to the birth of Bossa Nova and Brazilian Jazz, singers such as Elis Regina, Elizete Cardoso, Dalva de Oliveira, Alaide Costa, Joyce, and Clara Nunes became known in Brazil and around the world for the beauty and sensitivity of their performances. Featuring the signature songs of the most prominent female Brazilian singers, Andria Antoniou & Mario Bakuna invite their audience on a journey to Brazilian music! “Mario Bakuna, a sparkling guitarist, plays with palpable feeling – his virtuosic fluency on the fretboard is controlled and flourishes are perfectly placed. His voice has a texture like heavy cloth” – Songlines “The first time I saw Andria Antoniou on stage, I was in awe. Emerging powerfully and yet delicately form a unsuspecting setting, her silk-like voice embraced us all in the small and intimate venue, making it an unforgettable experience – it felt like being inside a sensual musical bubble, if you can ever picture one.” – Sandra Porto, journalist and editor at File Style London Mario Bakuna is a London-based Brazilian composer, singer and guitar player, with twenty years of professional experience. His study focuses on Afro-Brazilian music, Samba, Jazz and Bossa Nova. Since settling in London Mario has become one the most prominent names and a reference in Brazilian Music in England.
