Two outstanding artists from the UK and US are reunited once again to perform an energetic set of jazz, blues and funky grooves, celebrating great music and good times in the unique surroundings of Smokey Joe’s.
Cheltenham’s own Kim Cypher is one of the UK's most exciting saxophonists, vocalists and composers. Performing across the UK including a recent sell-out debut at world renowned Ronnie Scott’s jazz club, with 2 highly acclaimed albums including Top 10 rated album ‘Love Kim x’ under her belt plus a recent music video ‘Crazy Times’ declared “BEST music video 2020” by US Music Interview Magazine, Kim has firmly secured her position on the UK jazz scene as one of the UK’s most exciting and popular saxophonists, vocalists and composers. Having trained with legendary US saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis and UK jazz saxophonist Andy Sheppard, Kim’s style of performance is best described as ‘funky saxophonist meets 1940’s jazz singer’.
US guitarist B.D. Lenz is a prolific recording artist with 13 highly acclaimed albums under his belt featuring incredible original pieces recorded with an array of top musicians including, most recently guitarist Mike Stern and trumpeter Randy Brecker. His style of playing was celebrated by New York Times where it stated: "Part of the reason for his accessibility is that he not only fuses jazz and rock, he complements it with warm chords of funk, soul, and rhythm and blues." Mix together the styles of Pat Metheny, Mike Stern, and Stevie Ray Vaughn and you have the recipe for contempo-jazz guitarist B.D. Lenz. The New Jersey native has played guitar since his early teens, is a graduate of Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, and has studied with such masters as Mike Stern, Vic Juris, and Charlie Banacos along the way.
Having met a few years ago (when they were accidentally double-booked for a gig in the UK) Kim Cypher and B.D. Lenz just clicked. Their playing styles work so well together and compliment each other perfectly. Since that chance meeting, the two of them have performed several tours together and have recorded on a variety of collaborative music projects.
Following on from their previous reunion gigs, this gig is sure to be full of energy, emotion and some serious heart and soul playing. And, as if that's not enough, the band line up for this very special night features some of the UK's finest musicians:

Kim Cypher Biography
Kim Cypher is one of the UK’s most exciting saxophonists, vocalists and composers, having developed her own unique ‘funky’ style of saxophone playing, built upon influences by great players such as Gerald Albright, Maceo Parker, Pee Wee Ellis, Andy Sheppard, Dean Fraser, Courtney Pine and Grover Washington.
Kim trained alongside American saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis (saxophonist with James Brown and Van Morrison) and internationally acclaimed jazz saxophonist Andy Sheppard. Kim’s vocal style has been influenced by the great Billie Holiday together with a wide range of vocalists including Imelda May, Caro Emerald and Liane Carroll.
Inspired by the funkier side of jazz, Kim’s style of performance is best described as ‘funky saxophonist meets 1940′s jazz singer’. Kim performs an eclectic mix of music spanning many genres with a quirky, jazzy twist together with her own original material, all packaged up in a captivating performance and warm stage presence.
Kim’s debut album ‘Make Believe’ was released end of 2016, receiving glowing reviews and being featured on BBC Radio 2 Clare Teal’s show in August 2017. Following an album launch event at The Queen’s Hotel Cheltenham, Kim and her band performed a series of sell-out album tour dates across the UK and overseas which has included many Jazz Clubs and Festivals such as Pizza Express 'live' Soho, The Pheasantry Chelsea, The Stables Milton Keynes, Guiting Music Festival with Liane Carroll, Pershore Jazz Festival, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Bristol Jazz & Blues Festival, Nantwich Jazz & Blues Festival, Birmingham, Solihull & Sandwell Jazz Festival, Pershore Jazz Club, Aggborough Music Sessions, featured artist at Stroud Valley Arts Jazz, JB's Jazz Club, Chesterfield Jazz Club plus many more. Kim and her quartet were flown out to New York in 2016 for a private jazz performance at The Glasshouses in Manhattan.
Album number 2 'Love Kim x' released 3rd May 2019 and features some of the best jazz musicinas in the UK and US including Pee Wee Ellis on tenor saxophone (saxophonist and musical director with James Brown and Van Morrison), David Newton (voted best Jazz Pianist in the UK 14 times by the British Jazz Awards), double bass legend Clive Morton (Jamie Cullum's ex-tutor and long-time sideman to Frank Sinatra), phenomenal New York guitarist B.D. Lenz, guitarist Chris Cobbson (guitarist with Courtney Pine), percussionist Karl Vanden Bossche plus John-Paul Gard (organ and piano), Alex Steele (piano), Lee Jones (guitar), Tom Clarke-Hill (bass) and Mike Cypher (drums).
Kim's 'Love Kim x' album tour kicked off on 8th February 2019 with special guest Pee Wee Ellis at Bishops Cleeve Tithe Barn (Cleeve Concerts) to a sell-out audience. The tour has already included some great venues including Toulouse Lautrec in London, Tetbury Goods Shed, Severn Jazz Worcester, Annies Jazz Club in Southend, with many more great performances lined up including an album preview event on Mon 8th April at Pizza Express 'live' Soho and opening Stompin' On The Quomps Festival on Saturday 3rd August.
