About this concert
Nocturne and the Road Records presents: SAMANA / PILLOW
Nocturne is an evening of live Ambient and Improvised Music, Classical, World, Folk and Experimental taking place in the beautiful and haunting setting of St Michaels All Angels Church in Brighton, Victoria Rd.
This December, Nocturne is teaming up with Welsh Record Label The Road Records, to present a special annual Christmas concert featuring two awe inspiring musical outfits, SAMANA and PILLOW. This is a fundraiser event for Suicide & Co a charity which works to support bereaved individuals and open the conversation about suicide related grief. You can read more about the charity here
As an all artist-curated evening set up in the round, we seek to offer a uniquely immersive and intimate experience which will provide a passage for audience members to lose themselves to the magnanimity of the beautiful setting of St Michaels Church, encompassed by the soaring sounds of musical landscapes that encapsulate deep themes worthy of the changing of ones perspective.
Expect there to be candles, incense, a bar, mulled wine and special vibes. Whilst the heating will be on in the church, with it being one of the largest churches in Brighton, we strongly urge all audience members to dust off their thick garments and dress up nice and warm for the winter season.

SAMANA
“Meditative deep reflections, swooning wanderlust, an anaesthetising reach - think Nico, Jarboe, Mazzy Star” Voted No.1 psychedelic-folk album of 2022
★★★★ Mojo Magazine
“A record that truly inspires awe. Enough to transcend the listener into a state of melancholy bliss”
9/10 Line of Best Fit
"Oscillating between melancholic ballads and spiritual experiences, their music leads one on a journey of cinematic proportion that evokes ancient beliefs, revolution, healing, fallen civilisations and intense deliberations of love, loss and death
Samana weave together their distinct poetry, music, striking photography and fine-art into one unique project. Crafting every element of creation themselves, the process the pair adopt in the creation of their work is one of strong ritualistic devotion and is produced in their analogue recording studio ‘The Road Records’ and darkroom in the remote regions of Wales."
PILLOW
"Pillow is a string ensemble performing the dark and cinematic compositions of musician and composer James Osler. The music captures the richness of a classical tone, whilst retaining the freedom of improvisation and the storytelling of folk like melodies. Sighting influence from artists such as Nick Drake, Erik Satie, Olivier Messiaen and Max Richter to name a few, Pillow embarks on telling their own story of how sounds can emerge and give meaning to life’s experiences."
Hope to see you there x

Samana Biography
Samana was realised in the heart of a mountainous forest, during a year-long journey Rebecca Rose and Franklin Mockett undertook across the natural wilderness and distant cities of Eastern Europe. Lending their instincts solely to the road, and to the embodiment of freedom, their first creations were written in the vast isolation of nature and performed on the streets of the towns and villages they passed through. As two multi-disciplinary artists, Samana weave together their distinct poetry, music, striking photography and fine-art into one unique project. Crafting every element of creation themselves, the process the pair adopt in the creation of their work is one of strong ritualistic devotion and is produced in their analogue recording studio ‘The Road Records’ and darkroom in the remote regions of Wales.
Their music confronts the heaviest elements of the human condition, alternately surrendering to this heaviness and transcending it. It is an invitation to regain possession of ourselves and our time, as well as rediscovering harmony with the environment that surrounds us, compelling a desire to overcome our borders and to learn. Oscillating between melancholic ballads and spiritual experiences, their music leads one on a journey of cinematic proportion that evokes ancient beliefs, revolution, healing, fallen civilisations and intense deliberations of love, loss and death. They possess a truly unique spirit born from a nomadic and solitary existence, placing great emphasis on the philosophy of dreams, the interior of the subconscious and the power of improvisation. Each song created by Samana is constructed with an ethereal power and an emotional honesty which offers a direct passage into the essence of ourselves, removing ones veneer, with its shamanic quality. This is music for the soul.
