About this concert
PsyconFest takes over Lazybones Lounge for its 9th edition with an eclectic night of fusion infused acid jazz, electronica, neo-soul and psychedelic jazz. On the line-up four incredible acts: AstroVillain (Naarm/Melb) , EK & the Ekstraordinaires, Bike Thief and Yasmina Sadiki. AstroVillain (Naarm/Melb) is a jazz-funk collective, formed by Daniel McKenzie (keys) and Conor Anderson-Vague (drums). Inspired by many different types of music, this 5-piece have blended their own brand of acid-jazz and funk-fusion. Combining elements of mystical ambience alongside a number of crunchy riffs and wildly creative rhythmic ideas, AstroVillain has curated their signature planetary sound that has grooves its way into the heart of Melbourne's underground future-jazz scene. Bike Thief is a three-piece percussive unit: music for the dancefloor, created on drums, prepared double-bass and keyboard samplers. Expect intricate rhythms and flavours of breakbeat, jungle, juke and techno, filtered through the trio's unique instrumentation. EK & the Ekstraordinaires: A prolific composer and leader of many successful projects over the past 15 years, award-winning trumpeter Ellen Kirkwood has assembled some of her favourite musicians to form this exciting collective. Performing up-beat and fun re-imaginings of Ellen’s pieces from past projects such as Fat Yahoozah and Captain Kirkwood, EK & the Ekstraordinaires combine jazz with genres from around the world such as Balkan, Ethiopian and Latin American musics. With a lush 3-piece horn section backed by punchy drums and bass, EK & the Ekstraordinaires bring the party! Ellen Kirkwood - trumpet Melissa Mony - tenor sax Matt Bell - trombone Sarah Homeh - electric bass Alex Masso – drums Yasmina Sadiki is a Sydney based, established live performer and independent artist pioneering a fresh look into the possibilities of Jazz and Neo-Soul through her passion for the art. Growing up in Canterbury, over the years she has connected with many producers, artists and musicians from Sydney and beyond. Yasmina has deep love for improvisation and freestyling, she with her live band which alternate between a range of different instruments, creates a seductively magical experience. “Lengthy explorations into jazz, hip hop and soul, intricate and dense. There’s a sense of impending menace that pervades it all and makes it positively cinematic, her music bringing light to the darkest of corners”. Yasmina aspires to challenge the scene with a raw but poetic window into her life. Her insightful lyrical expression and nuanced vocal technique whisking us away into her world, creating something genuine and mesmerising.
