About this concert
Violinist and Grammy Award nominee Philippe Quint joins the Fort Wayne Philharmonic for an electric evening showcasing works by Edward Elgar and Ludwig van Beethoven.
Many, including the composer himself, consider Falstaff to be Elgar's greatest work, with critics of the time comparing the power of the work to that of Shakespeare himself. On this occasion Andrew Constantine will mischievously incorporate Shakespearean actors to add drama to this musical portrayal of the comedic and mendacious character from the Henry plays, Sir John Falstaff.
The evening closes with Beethoven's much-loved Violin Concerto. Unlike many of Beethoven's works, the concerto initially struggled for success, likely due to the rushed nature of its premiere. Today, it is considered to be one of the great masterpieces of the genre. This performance showcases the best of orchestral storytelling through themes of literature alongside the triumphant victory of Beethoven’s violin soloist pitted against the seemingly overwhelming forces of a full orchestra.
