About this concert
SONGS FOR THE PEOPLE is a night of deep listening and connection. Hosted and curated by Sariyah Idan it includes 4 artists performing original songs/poems in the round allowing the artists to be inspired and affected by each other through the course of the night. The event benefits a different community organization each month. $10 at the door, in The Den at The Howlin Wolf.
December's event features and benefits People For Public Art whose mission is to fund, create, & document works of public art in New Orleans + beyond. Their current project is empowering young artists in New Orleans while repainting the Beauty Plus mural. www.peopleforpublicart.com
XAVIER MOLINA: is a dynamic and prolific musician, singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist (guitars, keys, drums, bass, trumpet). He brings excellence, depth and heartfelt energy to every song he touches. Molina's newest solo project Sky Boy is a two-part journey that brilliantly expresses the ups and downs of learning to fly. His unique sound has captured audiences in the United States and collected fans in Germany, Italy, Spain, and Cuba. Xavier's live sets are magical, drawing audiences with every note; an enchanting and unforgettable experience. He holds a bachelor's degree in Jazz music from the University of New Orleans and has professionally forged into rock, indie rock, folk, funk, fusion, world music and even hip hop. SHA'CONDRIA “iCON” (Sices-Sibley) is an Alexandria, Louisiana native and longtime New Orleans-based poet and multi-inspired artist, whose work spans across page, stage, canvas, music, talk radio, and short film. A champion of poetry and art as healing and liberation tools, she shares her work and workshops inside schools, universities, prisons, juvenile detention centers, at conferences and festivals, and has worked for over a decade (and counting), creating, organizing, and hosting community-centered, arts-driven events. A multiple-time national poetry slam champion and viral spoken word artist, she appeared on TV One's Verses and Flow, and her work has been featured on many platforms including Huffington Post, For Harriet, Teen Vogue, and BBC World Radio. She is also featured on multiple recording projects alongside Grammy Award-winning artists. SARIYAH IDAN: is a New Orleans based & New York bred acoustic soul singer-songwriter with influences extending into jazz, world folk, and hip-hop. She weaves unique sonics while her poetic lyrics address struggle, love, social justice, and healing. Following her debut LP “Breaking Shadows” recorded in Los Angeles, Berlin and Lisbon, her new album “Glitter & Blood” released in Nov 2023 and is her first project recorded in New Orleans. Sariyah has rocked iconic venues like The Kennedy Center in DC, Nuyorican Poets Cafe in NYC, and The New Orleans Jazz Museum for FQF. She has shared stages with legends Pete Seeger, Lee “Scratch” Perry, and Yusef Lateef. Sariyah Idan is a New York bred and New Orleans based independent and internationally touring singer-songwriter, music producer, poet, dancer, and theater artist. She believes in the power of personal story and interdisciplinary performance to transform individuals, communities, and societies.
As a singer-songwriter and music director she has rocked iconic venues like The Kennedy Center in DC, The Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, The Nuyorican Poets Cafe in NYC, and Noize Fabrik in Berlin. In 2019 she was a Virginia Giordono Memorial Fund Honoree for performances of her album “Breaking Shadows”, recorded in Los Angeles, Berlin, and Lisbon. As a music artist she is jazz and folk trained, hip-hop educated, and influenced by both Latinx/Caribbean sounds and her Jewish roots. Praised for her "ability to seamlessly combine a wide variety of disparate styles and sonics into a memorable sound all her own," (Tinnitist) she views honoring the sounds of both influences and ancestors as a form of cultural activism. Her music has been featured on Pacifica and NPR stations, in addition to college radio and online radio platforms.
