Sounds of Stories Biography

Sounds of Stories is an Ottawa based indie-folk/rock band that began with Vanessa Luis and Bill Burns. The singer and guitar player met during their time at the University of Ottawa and began by playing covers for their friends and at open mics. They found comfort in expressing some of their hardships in life through music and began writing together. Shortly after, Bill’s older brother Jason Burns joined the ranks taking his mandolin with him. The original trio played as the New Standard during their early years but the band’s name was changed to Sounds of Stories in late 2013 to better suit their style. Since then, they have been joined by Emma Healy on keys and vocals, percussionist Simon Leger, and Sam Fisher on lead guitar. Sounds of Stories’ first album, The Voyage, was successfully released in September 2015. The songs on the album featured cellist Fiona Armstrong and were inspired by unconventional families, favorite childhood novels, and the ups and downs of life. The recording was done at Pebble Studios in Barrhaven, ON and was mixed and mastered at Deslauriers Audio by sound engineer Joel-Azarie Deslauriers. The Voyage strays from the band’s folk roots at times with elements of country and classical music interwoven with catchy choruses and up-beat tempos. Bill cites Daughter, The Lumineers, Mumford and Sons, and Of Monsters and Men as Sounds of Stories’ musical influences. The band will not be slowing down just yet. They are already working on their next album which they hope will be released by Spring 2017. Keep up to date on their performances and progress by visiting their website www.soundsofstories.com.
