About this concert
Neo-classicism, a Western cultural movement in arts, was rooted in artists drawing inspiration from subjects of classical antiquity; in music, this meant the revival of fondness for court dances, sectional form, as well as a variety of musical styles from the past. This was partly a result of the manifestation of desiring simplicity and cleanness in style.
The first wave of neo-classism sparked a general appreciation for balanced structures and lyrical melodies in music during the Classical period (ca. 1730–1820), while the later waves between the World Wars–perhaps a lament for worldly order and clarity, or a reaction against the unrestrained expressionism during the period–see composers drawing musical subjects of the past.
This upcoming concert by Kamerata KL is an homage to the unfailingly tuneful dances and melodies that reminisce of neo-classicistic styles. The programme will include a delicate Sarabande by Saint-Saëns, a Classical symphony by Boyce, Elgar and Fuchs’ enchanting serenades, and the Holbert Suite–Grieg’s musical ode to the 18th-century Dano-Norwegian playwright, Ludvig Holberg.
