About this concert
BROTHERS LAZAROFF SET TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM, MEMPHIS, RECORDED AT LEGENDARY SUN STUDIO IN A SINGLE DAY Album release show on May 11 at Joe's Café to feature storytelling by frequent collaborator Rabbi James Stone Goodman ST. LOUIS, April 3, 2023 – Beloved St. Louis band Brothers Lazaroff is set to release their ninth full-length album, Memphis, recorded in one day a year ago at the legendary Sun Studio. Joined by frequent collaborators Rabbi James Stone Goodman and their cousin, Mandocaster player Stuart Rosenberg from Chicago, Brothers Lazaroff made the pilgrimage to Sun Studio to record Memphis live with all of the musicians in the same room and no overdubs. The band will celebrate the album's release with a special show on Thursday, May 11 at Joe's Café & Art Gallery, during which the entire album will be performed during the first set, with Goodman reading his recounting of this journey of convergences. The idea for Memphis was born during a trip brothers/bandleaders David and Jeff Lazaroff took in April 2022 to the iconic music city to see Bob Dylan perform at the Orpheum Theatre and take a tour of Sun Studio. After discovering the studio was open to the public at night for bands to record after tour hours, they created a plan to bring some of their extended musical crew down for one night – May 24, 2022 – Bob Dylan's birthday. "We went down with our own engineers and gear to augment their two engineers and their vintage gear and recorded eight songs," says David Lazaroff. "Some we wrote during the pandemic and hadn't been able to record, others are based on poems by Rabbi Goodman, plus a couple brand new ones and a couple pieces of the Rabbi's that seemed appropriate for the setting." The session and album was produced and mastered by Maxwell Citron, founder of HOMHOMHOM records and Rabbi Goodman's son-in-law. "We were tapping into the original setting of the space. We didn’t want it too clean or pretty," Rabbi Goodman recalls. "There was a natural grit that belonged to the place, its geography and history. More than ambiance, the ghosts of the originals who recorded there presiding, in the café in the next room some of the guys jammed Elvis tunes on guitars we picked off the stands in the studio." In addition to Goodman and Rosenberg, the new album features regular band members Teddy Brookins on bass, Sam Golden on upright piano, Chris Hansen on percussion, Mark Hochberg on violins, Adam Hucke on trumpet and Freddy Spencer on drums The band is also releasing a short film at the May 11 show about the trip with Blip Blap Video's Brian McClleland. Doors open at 7 p.m. for the 8 p.m. show. Tickets are available in advance for $15 via Eventbrite or $20 at the door. Bring your own drinks. Parking is available on Des Peres Ave. only.

Brothers Lazaroff Biography

Describing Brothers Lazaroff and the music they play is no easy task. Shapeshifting through endless configurations…4-7 piece Rock band, 8-11 piece Jazz band, World Music Orchestra, stripped-down roots combo…floating across genres playing their catalog of original songs with a family of some of St. Louis’ finest musicians. As Daniel Hill, Music Editor at the Riverfront Times notes, ”Since 2009, David and Jeff Lazaroff have been writing and releasing some of the most interesting and eclectic music in the city, pulling from a wide range of inspirations — from americana to psych-rock to jazz to world music, and everything in between — to consistently bring energetic and memorable sounds to the streets of St. Louis.” With annual, bi-annaul and monthly events at some of St. Louis’ most beloved music venues, Brothers Lazaroff can often be found rocking the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Whitaker Festival, playing a weekend at the esteemed Jazz At The Bistro, getting psychedelic at Joe’s Cafe, going acoustic at the Tower Grove Farmer’s Market, doing a late-night Americana set at Off Broadway and woodshedding new tunes for their loyal fans at the Tick Tock Tavern. It’s no hyperbole to say nobody does what Brothers Lazaroff do. Some history... Since the mid 90's, Jeff and David Lazaroff having been on a quest to soak up as many musical sources and inspirations as possible. Beginning with two acoustic guitars and songbooks of the great Folk, Rock, Country and Blues artists, the brothers look at musicology, songwriting and spirituality as a way of understanding life and creating meaning. While David spent the first decade of the 2000’s living in Austin, TX, the two based out of the “Live Music Capital of the World” with Jeff frequently visting to record and play shows in the vibrant scene where roots music reigned supreme. At the same time the brothers would regularly travel to Chicago, IL to work in their cousin Stuart Rosenberg’s studio with his band of world-class Chicago musicians who shared stories of cutting their teeth with the likes of Muddy Waters, Curtis Mayfield, Willie Dixon, Ramsey Lewis and more. Those experiences in music industry towns helped shape the brothers’ art, as well as their work ethic and respect for the craft. Officially reunited back in St. Louis since 2009, the brothers pull off their form of alchemy with Grover Stewart (drums), Teddy Brookins (bass), Mark Hochberg ((violin/sound design), Sam Golden (keyboards, violin, guitar), Adam Hucke (trumpet/fluegelhorn), Ben Reece (saxophone/flute), Stuart Rosenberg (violin/mandocaster), Chris Hansen (percussion), James Stone Goodman (vocals/guitar) Andrew Warshauer (DJ), Paco Proano (sound design/art), Sam Ohlhausen (audio engineer), Jacob Detering (mixing/mastering) and JJ Campbell (graphic design). Brothers Lazaroff is a sibling songwriting/production team and six-piece rock band from St. Louis, MO that plays soulful and psychedelic roots music.
