Hopeless Jack: He sings in the voice Mike Ness wishes he had—a deep, silk-and-asphalt baritone that sounds like it could blast doors off their hinges or entice sweet young things into the backseat. His bright eyes and friendly smile can seem at odds with his Mohawk, tattoos and piercings. His height is just average, but he seems bigger when he’s stomping and jumping onstage. Like the man himself, “Hopeless” Jack Beisel’s brand of the blues isn’t easily categorized. It doesn’t wallow in despair or strive hopelessly for some lost or nonexistent purity. You can party to it for sure, but it’s not just mindless, swaggering bar-band boogie. Instead, it embraces everything life has to offer—the struggle, the sadness, the anger, the joy.
