Schon lange arbeitete Bandleader Wade Schuman mit Gitarrist Erik Della Penna an neuen Songs, die dann auf der Sommertour 2023 auf der neuen CD “Bonfire” zu hören sind. Die gewährte Mischung aus Blues, World und Jazzelementen machen die Band auch nach 16 Jahren intensiven touren immer noch und wieder zu einem einzigartigen Liveerlebnis. .Sie nennen ihr neues Album und die Lieder dort: “ als Lieder eines ruhelosen Amerikas, der Unzufriedenheit, der Besinnung, und der Hoffnung”. Neue Songs wie "Garden of Grievance" und "Too Fat to Fly" sind scharfe Sozialkritiken, die sich in musikalischen Stilen von 70er-Jahre-Folk-Blues bis Rocksteady bewegen. Andere Songs wie "Paulina" und "Late at Night" sind bewegende Country-Geschichten, die sich mit den Komplikationen intimer Beziehungen auseinandersetzen.
Die Band ist nach wie vor eine üppige Mischung aus Gesang, Gitarren, Mundharmonika, Schlagzeug, Percussion, Tuba, Saxophon, Trompete und Posaune. Der jüngste Neuzugang, der auf "Bonfire" mitspielt und auch live mit der Band auftritt, ist die junge Geigenvirtuosin Daisy Castro, ein heller Stern mit erstaunlicher Musikalität.

One of New York’s most original bands, HAZMAT MODINE delivers a rustic, deliriously Dionysian blend of whorehouse Blues, Reggae, Klezmer, Country and Gypsy-tinged music. The band features the dueling harmonicas of front-man Wade Schuman and his sparring partner Randy Weinstein, funky tuba powerhouse Joseph Daly, virtuoso guitarists Bob Jay, Jon Sholle, and Dan Hovey, and drummer Scott Veenstra. HAZMAT holds down a smoldering groove behind Schuman’s raspy, bluesy voice and passionately energetic stage presence. Their playful blend of genres also extends to their use of instrumentation, including the sheng (the ancient Chinese mouthorgan), the unique and odd claviola, and sometimes the cimbalom (the Romanian hammered dulcimer). While they play mostly originals, their cover versions are choice and eclectic, including songs by Slim Gaillard, Jimmy Rogers, Jaybird Coleman, and Irving Berlin.
