About this concert
2:00 PM GMT3 Going
Georgia Rose Lucas presents a special 80th birthday tribute to her mum Sandy Denny: pioneer of British folk-rock and one of the UK’s greatest singer-songwriters. Twice voted ‘Best British Female Singer’, her classic, Who Knows Where the Time Goes was voted ‘Best Folk Song of All Time’. Lead singer of folk-rock trailblazers Fairport Convention and Fotheringay and acclaimed solo artist. Led Zeppelin’s only guest vocalist, her songs have been covered by over 200 artists including: Nina Simone, Judy Collins, Emmylou Harris, Eva Cassidy, Barbara Dickson, Eddi Reader, Mary Black, Groove Armada, Fish, Linda and Richard Thompson and Karen Matheson. ‘She was heartbreakingly beautiful, her smoky, sexy voice, cracking in just the right place to touch the emotional heart of the song’. Ralph McTell An outstanding line-up of musicians, friends and admirers come together for a day of celebration of Sandy’s life and music. Sandy and Friends: the Soho years An exploration in conversation and music of the influence of her musician friends on Sandy Denny’s uniquely emotive singing, playing and songwriting style, including: Davy Graham, John Renbourn, Bert Jansch, Anne Briggs, Martin Carthy, Dave Swarbrick, Jackson C Frank, John Martyn and Trevor Lucas. The Lady she has a silver tongue… Sandy’s songs, including her classic Who Knows Where the Time Goes, performed by artists who have all played a part in keeping her creative flame alive since her all-too-early death in 1978. This special anniversary event honours the enduring legacy of an artist whose hauntingly soulful music continues to console, enchant and inspire. A heartfelt gift from a daughter to the mother she only knows through her sublime music. ‘Whether as singer or writer her voice speaks to us still with uncanny urgency’. Artist bio
Fotheringay MkII members Sally Barker (The Poozies, BBCTV's "The Voice") and guitarist PJ Wright (TradArrr, The Dylan Project) are joined by singer and multi-instrumentalist Marion Fleetwood (Feast of Fiddles, The Woody Guthrie Story, TRADarrr, IOTA, FleetwoodCave), Gemma Shirley (TRADarrr, the Bullfrog Blues Band) on piano and vocals, and the rhythm section of bassist Mat Davies and drummer Mark Stevens from folk-rock legends Little Johnny England to form The Sandy Denny Project. Sandy Denny’s remarkable writing is approached not as a tribute band, slavishly copying the records, but as a tribute in its best sense - an interpretation of Sandy's wonderful work.
With every year Sandy's reputation continues to grow in stature as a songwriter and interpreter of traditional material, and the six musicians in the band who share an impressive folk-rock pedigree are each at the very top of their musical game.
And they smile a lot.
