Artist bio
Emma Giulia (aka Emma Julia Feldhandler-Mugnaini or Emma Feld-Mugnaini) is a French guitarist and composer (Paris, 1999) who started playing guitar at the age of 6, her heroes at the time being Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Buddy Guy. At the age of 14 Emma started to learn jazz and improvisation by listening to the likes of Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall and Pat Metheny. When she, at the age of 16, discovered Charles Mingus she got interested in composition and arrangement. Meanwhile she listened to Brazilian composers like Milton Nascimento and Caetano Veloso, as well as alternative rock (St Vincent, Moodoïd) and French chanson (Rita Mitsouko). She studied at the Amsterdam Conservatory from September 2020 to June 2022 with Jesse Van Ruller, Tineke Postma, and José James. September 2021 she formed a group with international musicians from the Amsterdam jazz scene: Tijs Klaassen (double bass/Netherlands), Federica Lorusso (piano/Italy), Lucas Santana (flute/Brazil), Chen Har Even (drums/Israel), and Meeliann Kosk (Estonia/Vocals). May 2023, Emma was selected to participate in the WIZZ Mentoring Program created by Anne Paceo, Les Gémeaux, and the Jazz Sous les Pommiers Festival. This program aims to support young female jazz musicians and composers because of which Emma played two concerts October 2024 at the Théatre des Gémeaux in Paris, and at the Théatre de Coutances in Normandy. Recently Emma was selected one of the winners of the 2025 Made in New York Jazz Competition.
