About this concert
Samara Joy has a wonderful voice. By her choice of repetoire, she invites comparison with the great singers who have influenced her, particularly Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, who she has also studied intently. But her respectful interpretations balances tradition with the freshness of youth, and more contemporary influences, with the result that her voice has a timeless quality thats pure jazz. Adam Seiff - londonjazznews.comWith a voice as smooth as velvet, SAMARA JOYs star seems to rise with each performance. Although having only recently celebrated her 21st birthday, Samara has already performed in many of the great jazz venues in NYC, including Dizzys Club Coca Cola, The Blue Note, and Mezzrow, in addition to working with jazz greats such as Christian McBride, Pasquale Grasso, Kirk Lightsey, Cyrus Chestnut, and NEA Jazz Master Dr. Barry Harris. People are forever using the word timeless as if it were the greatest praise ever, but in a way, Samaras voice and her music seem to belong to all time, like shes connected to the entire history of jazz all at once - as if she were existing in every era simultaneously, she sounds both classic and contemporary. Absolutely wonderful performance by not only Samara Joy, but her family the McClendon family. Clearly it is where Samara has inherited a talented rich legacy of song. Samara’s 94 year old grandfather was escorted on stage and preceded to amaze us with a heartfelt rendition of “It is well with My Soul”, which received a standing ovation. Antonio McClendon (Samara’s father), is a very accomplished vocalist & guitarist. This is my second time experiencing Samara Joy. The first was at NJPAC in June of this year. I thoroughly enjoyed both shows. Samara Joy, has a fan in me and the introduction to the McClendon family has me a fan of them as well. I thoroughly enjoyed the show.

Samara Joy Biography

With her Verve Records debut, Linger Awhile, 23-year-old Samara Joy makes her case to join the likes of Sarah, Ella, and Billie as the next mononymous jazz singing sensation recorded by the venerable label. Her voice, rich and velvety yet precociously refined, has already earned her fans like Anita Baker and Regina King, appearances on the TODAY Show and millions of likes on TikTok — cementing her status as perhaps the first Gen Z jazz singing star. On Linger Awhile, Samara will introduce that massive audience to a slew of classic standards several times older than she is through her timeless, irresistible sound.

Samara is still relatively new to jazz. Growing up in the Bronx, it was other music of the past — the music of her parent’s childhoods, as she put it — that she listened to most. She treasures her musical lineage, which stretches back to her grandparents Elder Goldwire and Ruth McLendon, both of whom performed with Philadelphia gospel group the Savettes, and runs through her father, who is a singer, songwriter and producer who toured with gospel artist Andraé Crouch. Eventually, she did follow in the family tradition, singing in church and then with the jazz band at Fordham High School for the Arts, with whom she won Best Vocalist at JALC’s Essentially Ellington competition. That led to her enrolling in SUNY Purchase’s jazz studies program, where she fell deeply in love with the music.
