About this concert
THIS INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY We center the legacy and future of Urban Natives. From NYC to LA and every rez, barrio, and block in between, we honor those who held it down in cities for our people: the Black Panthers, AIM warriors, Young Lords, Chicano Movement, aunties, OGs, street scholars, and the first brick thrown at Stonewall. Their teachings continue to guide us. We recognize that borders are colonial, and we are still sovereign — we always have been. This celebration is about presence, resistance, and power on stolen land. We move in love, we move in protection, and we’ve always moved together. You are on Indigenous land. WHY IT MATTERS INDIGENOUS PEOPLES LIVE IN EVERY BOROUGH OF NEW YORK CITY, YET ERASURE FUELS ONGOING INEQUITIES IN HEALTH, HOUSING, EDUCATION, AND REPRESENTATION. DESPITE CENTURIES OF DISPLACEMENT, SURVEILLANCE, AND ASSIMILATION, URBAN NATIVES HAVE ALWAYS CARRIED CULTURE, COMMUNITY, AND KINSHIP FORWARD. This event is more than a celebration. It’s a: * Platform for visibility in a city where Indigenous peoples are too often rendered invisible. * Space of cultural survival where traditions, art, and food are centered, not erased. * Catalyst for action, raising funds that directly support UIC’s year-round programs: behavioral health services, mentorship, cultural healing, and advocacy for Indigenous rights. This year’s celebration marks six years since Urban Indigenous Collective first launched on Randall’s Island as part of Indigenous Peoples Day NYC [https://ipdnyc.squarespace.com/]. Now in its 11th year, Indigenous Peoples Day NYC has been at the forefront of advocating for official recognition of Indigenous Peoples Day in New York City, carrying forward powerful legacy work rooted in community, ceremony, and resistance. From that foundation, UIC has grown into a community-led organization building health, wellness, and cultural programming for Urban Natives across the city. Our anniversary honors both the legacy of Indigenous Peoples Day NYC and the future of Urban Indigenous Collective.  Impact of Last Year’s Event Thanks to the incredible support from last year’s Indigenous Peoples Day celebration, UIC was able to: * Create a dedicated Wellness Room in our community space * Hire our first Indigenous therapist to provide culturally grounded care * Design our direct services program, which will officially roll out this winter Your participation makes real change possible. Every ticket, donation, and sponsorship helps us expand healing and wellness services for Urban Natives across the city. ACTIVATIONS & HIGHLIGHTS Traditional Indigenous Cuisine Sample dishes rooted in Indigenous food traditions, prepared by Native chefs and food vendors.
