About this concert
On Thursday, October 9, Joe Hysell takes over The Zen Arcade Stage at The Hook and Ladder’s Mission Room to celebrate the release of his brand-new EP, Still Gonna Try. This is Hysell at his boldest - blending Americana grit, rock ’n’ roll fire, and songwriting that hits you right in your broken heart.
---
Joe Hysell is a south Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter who stands at the crossroads of Americana’s heartfelt storytelling and rock ’n’ roll’s unrelenting edge. Raised on a musical compass that spans from the misty Blue Ridge Mountains to the wide-open heart of the Midwest to those golden California shores, Hysell writes songs that cut deep - rich with grit, fire, and unshakable honesty. With his fourth EP, Still Gonna Try, Hysell takes his most daring leaps yet. Building on his alt-country roots, he layers raw, guitar-driven textures over lyrics that feel lived-in and true. The result is a sound that’s bigger, bolder, and more urgent than anything he’s done before - a testament to an artist willing to push past comfort, chase new horizons, and sing straight from his oceanic soul.

Joe Hysell Music Biography
Joe Hysell is a Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter whose music bridges the gap between Americana storytelling and gritty rock ’n’ roll. With roots stretching from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the heart of the Midwest, Hysell crafts songs that are as emotionally resonant as they are musically adventurous.
Since his debut EP Workin’ Too Hard in 2017, Hysell has steadily built a reputation as a compelling voice in the alt-country and Americana scenes. His 2018 release, The Superman EP, showcased his narrative prowess, weaving tales of interconnected lives with rich, evocative lyrics. Collaborations with musicians like Dan Neale have further enriched his sound, blending traditional country elements with modern sensibilities.
In December 2022, Hysell released the single “Still Gonna Try,” marking a bold evolution in his musical journey. Departing from his alt-country roots, the track dives into raw rock energy, channeling the spirit of his musical heroes while navigating themes of heartbreak and resilience. This fearless exploration continued with subsequent singles like “I Don’t Wanna Fight” and “I Promise To Do Better,” both produced by acclaimed Minneapolis producer Kevin Bowe.
Hysell’s live performances, often accompanied by his band The Ramblin’ Mercenaries, are known for their authenticity and emotional depth. His upcoming show at the 331 Club in Minneapolis on July 10, 2025, promises to be a testament to his dynamic stage presence and musical versatility.
With a discography that reflects both his personal growth and artistic exploration, Joe Hysell continues to carve out his niche in the American songwriting landscape. His music is available on major streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, and Bandcamp.
