Rocky Votolato Biography
Over the last twenty years, Rocky Votolato has produced an impressive canon of music anchored by earnest, lyrical songwriting, delivered in a stripped-down indie-folk style that has evolved out of the Pacific Northwest music scene he was raised in. He has matured over the course of eight increasingly accomplished solo albums and writes songs that seem to have been scratched into a boxcar wall by a worn-out and lonesome ghost.
With each release Votolato has toured the country endlessly, playing 200+ shows a year for over a decade. During his time on the road, he has developed a loyal and extremely devoted core group of fans across North America and Europe that love him for the personal impact his music has had on their lives.
Alternative Press described his album “Suicide Medicine” by saying “Votolato has stones like Bruce Springsteen and hang over wisdom like Paul Westerberg.” His follow up “Makers” went on to be lauded by both indie and mainstream press, with No Depression calling it “surpassingly great” and Rolling Stone saying, “Makers demonstrates Votolato’s nuanced command of the folk idiom”.
Wild Roots, Votolato’s first release in seven years, is an expansive concept album inspired by and written for and about his family. The album examines his family relationships one song at a time - each song a dedication, and kind of “gift”, written specifically for each of his family members. Produced, engineered, and mixed by Votolato himself, this album marks a new chapter of independence and depth in his recording career. Teaming up with Seattle based composer and instrumentalist Abby Gundersen (Noah Gundersen, William Fitzsimmons) added lush string arrangements, single note piano lines, and vocal harmonies that perfectly compliment the delicate nature of these songs.
