Maria Kataeva

Mezzo-soprano Maria Kataeva graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 2012. While she was still studying singing, she became a member of the opera studio at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, where she became a permanent member of the ensemble and leading soloist just two years later. On the Düsseldorf stage, Maria Kataeva sings numerous title roles in music genres from baroque to contemporary music.
Guest performances have taken Maria Kataeva to such opera theaters as the Bolshoi Theater Moscow, the Dresden Semperoper, the Grand Théâtre de Genève, the Opéra Bastille Paris, the Théâtre du Capitole Toulouse, the Opera Vlaandern Antwerpen/Gent and the Edmonton Opera Canada.
Maria Kataeva has received awards at numerous voice competitions. In 2014 she placed third in the Paris Opera Competition. In 2016, she won 1st prize in the general category and 3rd prize in the German category of the voice competition "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg" (Nuremberg), and in 2019 she was simultaneously awarded the second prize and the prize of the audience at the prestigious Operalia competition in Prague.
In October 2019, Maria Kataeva took part in a unique concert with Placido Domingo in Moscow. In the 2020/2021 season she made her debut at the invitation of the Spanish tenor at the Bolshoi Theater at the gala "Placido Domingo & Friends" and in June 2021 at the Mariinsky Theater alongside her renowned Spanish colleague with a zarzuela program at the Stars of the White Nights Gala.
In the 2021/22 season, Maria Kataeva can be seen at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in a new production of Mozart's "La clemenza di Tito" as Sesto and as Rosina (Rossini's "Il barbiere di Siviglia").
In the 2021/22 season, she will take part in the final concert of the Mozart Week in Salzburg. She will also make her debut at the Rossini Festival in Pesaro (Italy), where she will appear as Isolier in the opera "Le comte Ory". In the 2022/23 season, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein is staging a new production of Tchaikovsky's "The Maid of Orleans", in which Maria Kataeva takes on the main role. Future guest engagements include the title role in the new production of Bizet's "Carmen" at the Hamburg State Opera.
