About this concert
Future Awkwardness is proud to present the Irish debut of three of the UK’s most thrilling new electronic artists – Sulk Rooms, Kayla Painter and James Adrian Brown. This triple bill of spectacular musical talent is a showcase of just how good the underground electronic scene across the Irish Sea is right now, and all three artists are hugely excited to be making their live debuts on these shores together at the Crowbar Terrace in Dublin’s iconic Button Factory. This will be a feast for the ears and the eyes, the mind and the soul. Don’t miss out on catching these artists in an intimate space with one of the city’s best musical setups. Sulk Rooms: A pseudonym of Yorkshire-based composer Thomas Ragsdale, the music of Sulk Rooms draws the link between euphoric electronica and smoke engulfed drones. Slow-morphing textures sequence and cascade, encapsulating intimate moments of colliding sound amongst fluttering arpeggios and transcending synth builds. A predominant soundtrack artist included in many of Adam Curtis’ groundbreaking BBC documentaries as well as scoring BBC true crime series, Netflix features and Prada commercials, Sulk Rooms is part of Domino Publishing’s prestigious composer roster. Atmospheric music for the head alongside the heart, Sulk Rooms' music captures spontaneous audio mirages and saturated imperfections within a crushing backdrop of low end and harmonic ferocity. Electric soundscapes and rising techno map Sulk Rooms' universe where panoramic pulses fuel adrenaline charged synths to feelings of both wonder and unease. “Sulk Rooms summons slow moving and portentous drones that feel both elemental and diffuse” - Wire Magazine “Ephemeral, elusive and gloriously unsettling” - Electronic Sound Magazine Twitter / Instagram / YouTube / Bluesky: @sulkrooms Bandcamp: thomasragsdalemusic.bandcamp.com Linktree: linktr.ee/sulkrooms Kayla Painter: Kayla Painter is an experimental sound artist, musician, producer and DJ. Painter’s immersive, ever-evolving AV performances are a natural consequence of the entire writing process – the visuals figure into the earliest stages of her music. 2024 saw her biggest release to date, with her debut album Fractures, written about NASA’s mission to Jupiter's frozen moon. Kayla was awarded ‘Best Electronic Album of the year’ by Bandcamp for Fractures, as well as the Women Make Music PRSF award for the album’s creation. Having grown up as a multi-instrumentalist, and playing in more conventional bands at University, Painter’s personal journey led her deeper into electronic music production. Her academic work focuses on the human relationship with sound, and this is reflected in her compositions. She is a passionate explorer of the creative potential within field recording; her compositions bristle with self-sourced timbres captured in an enduring spirit of experimentation. She also uses her platform to explore specific themes both personal and external: 2018’s Cannibals At Sea grappled with her mixed Fijian-British heritage, juxtaposing Pacific islander beliefs with British working class values in a compelling exploration of her own identity and the wider world around her. After achieving chart success, touring the world, and releasing four critically acclaimed studio albums with PABH, James has begun paving a new path in instrumental electronic music and composition. Brown’s solo work is heavily electronica-based, utilising analogue synths alongside tape machines, piano, strings, and immersive ambient atmospherics. His focus lies in the analogue process of capturing and creating sound using physical hardware. He has received support from the likes of Gideon Coe on BBC 6 Music and Chris Hawkins, who championed him for creating “massive electronic soundscapes in a Mogwai kind of world.” James was also featured on BBC Radio 3’s Unclassified by host Elizabeth Alker. Taking inspiration from artists such as Boards of Canada, Rival Consoles and Thom Yorke, Brown is exploring, evolving, and pushing his songwriting into bold new sonic territories. His debut album is set to be released at the end of this year on the revered UK electronic label Castles In Space, marking a significant new chapter in his journey as a solo artist.
