hotgirl Biography
The Dublin/Drogheda-based band hotgirl originally started out as a bedroom project by songwriter Ashley Abbedeen, who then found her current band members through an Instagram call: guitarist Sophie Boxwell, bassist Jake Hurley and drummer Nick Stanley. A DIY lo-fi sound quickly turned into a group sound that is sometimes noisy, sometimes dreamy - as can be heard on the debut EP »Sick Sad World«. Guitars fly through the air on clouds of reverb, accompanied by a voice that is second to none.
hotgirl occasionally sound like dream pop à la Beach House, but are deliberately more provocative in their gestures: some instruments stop at unusual places or drift into dissonance, while the rhythm section doesn't let itself be thrown off course for even a second. At the end of the EP opener "Teenage Dreams," for example, the guitars become oppressive, more brutal and sound like shoegaze, whereas "My Big Sister" is more in the direction of pop punk. You can call this music whatever you want, but in the end it is primarily indie rock. And you can't help but love that.
