About this concert
It’s been 25 years since the Kinematic songwriters first got together and they’re celebrating this milestone with, what else? More music in the form of their sixth independent studio album. But first, another single ...After the release of the positively jaunty Seaside Town earlier this year, Kinematic are doing what they they so often do – changing gears entirely. Don’t Be Afraid was conceived as a comfort to Mike’s youngest son on his first day of school, but in 2025 the song transcends its schoolyard origins and takes on new meaning, offering solace in a politically charged and war-torn world. The stirring strings that open the track were performed by bassist Mik and violinist Jippa, who first played with the band on their debut album Time & Place and now joins them for live shows – yes, Kinematic is now a five-piece.To launch this single, Kinematic returns to its favourite stomping ground of High Street, Northcote with a special show at the Wesley Anne on Saturday 7 June. They’ll be joined by local musical friends and accomplices Gerard Dale and David Hosking and Sarah Liversidge (playing their first show in ages as they prepare to release David’s new album). Our latest single Don’t Be Afraid (accompanied by an old school B-side, an acoustic version of crowd-favourite, Louder) will be available on the band’s preferred digital platform Bandcamp from Saturday 24 May and everywhere else from Saturday 31 May.

Kinematic Biography

Kinematic (pron. Kin-eh-mat-ick) is an independent band from Melbourne, Australia. There's no great backstory - no one in the band was once a UN peace keeper, grew up in cult or met when an elevator got stuck between floors - but like a lot of musicians, they have held down some 70-odd jobs between them to support their musical habits. Oh, Lily Allen once gave Gordo a vase of flowers, but they didn't write a song about it so we probably shouldn't have brought it up. Anywho, as of 2025 they have five studio albums, a compilation, a soundtrack, a live album/film, a whole bunch of singles and studio album #6 on the way. Their music has been described as indie rock, pop, folk, country, alternative and electronic, all of which is confusingly true. They're hard to pigeonhole but if, you're looking for a genre to file them under, we suggest 'Unpop'. Better still, just listen!
