About Xela
Xela is a soulful multifaceted singer and songwriter. New Zealand born and trained, based
between Auckland and Sydney, Xela resonated with music from an early age and later
trained in jazz performance at NZSM. She draws influence from the likes of Kimbra, Aluna,
Raye, Billie Eilish, Sabrina Claudio and Radiohead. The stage name comes from her given
name (Alex) backwards, and is pronounced Zeh-la.
Described as a ‘sublime and sultry’ vocalist she reflects her passion for rich harmony, a
good boogie, and freedom through writing with an unapologetic sensuality that carries
through her songs that run intertwined with catchy melodies.
Xela studied jazz performance and improvisation at New Zealand School of Music and has
worked with some well known New Zealand artists such as John Psathas, Name UL, Drax
Project, NZSO and R.E.I. and more recently producers Solomon Crook and Neil Macleod.
In 2021 Xela released two of her own singles ‘Just Because’ and ‘No Love’, allowing her to
gain recognition in the New Zealand and Australian music industries. This was after initial
inspiration releasing a collaborative track in 2020 she wrote and produced with New
Zealand composer John Psathas. When able to, she regularly performs live in Sydney and
in New Zealand when over there with live bands.
