Max Shrager Biography

Max Shrager emerged on the NYC soul music scene at a young age.

His early productions, recorded as a high school student in New Jersey, caught the ear of Daptone Records founder Gabe Roth. This led to Shrager receiving his first credit at seventeen, penning “Sinner” for Naomi Shelton and the Gospel Queens.

Big Crown Records founder Leon Michels (El Michels Affair) also took interest in Shrager’s work. Michels helped nineteen-year old Shrager assemble his tracks into what would become his first solo album, Thoughts Of You.

In 2014, Shrager befriended classmate Shannon Wise, with whom he founded influential psych-pop project The Shacks.

Shrager and Michels went on to co-produce The Shacks EP and The Shacks’ full length LP, Haze.

Shrager has contributed songwriting and instrumentation to releases including Thee Lakesiders’ “Parachute” and Lady Wray’s Guilty and Piece of Me LPs.

As a guitarist, Shrager has toured internationally with artists including Charles Bradley, The Shacks and Lee Fields.

In 2020, Shrager produced Say She She’s “Prism.”

In 2022, Shrager debuted Las Los, a collaboration with Paul Schalda (The Sha La Das). The duo’s recordings include contributions from Alex Garcia and Sal Samano of Thee Sacred Souls and brothers Jimi and Kane Maraday of Kane and James.

Shrager’s 2023 single “Fried” features singer/songwriter Evangeline on background vocals. He is currently based in LA, where he produces and plays with a variety of artists.
