About this concert
Revolución diamantina is Gabriela Ortiz’s bold response to the 2019 feminist uprising around Mexico’s epidemic of violence against women. Named after an event where protesters threw pink glitter at Mexico City’s chief of police to denounce the rape of a woman by local officers, “Ortiz’s atmospheric, percussion-rich score fizzes with a sense of restless unease” (BBC Music Magazine). Gustavo Dudamel says, “Gabriela Ortiz’s music speaks to both the body and the spirit, full of visceral primeval rhythms and mysterious, soulful sound-worlds.” As a culmination of their amazing partnership, Dudamel revisits the Grammy-nominated Revolución diamantina in his final season as LA Phil Music & Artistic Director. And for the first time ever, Ortiz’s music is set in motion, with Grupo Corpo—the internationally renowned dance company known for its blend of popular Brazilian culture, African rhythms, and classical technique. To kick off the program, Dudamel channels the ecstatic, whirling energy of Beethoven’s Seventh, described by the composer himself as his “most excellent symphony.” Its introduction simmers and builds with sweet woodwind phrases between booming string chords, eventually soaring ahead to a prancing finale with joyful mania.
