Júlia Colom Biography

Júlia Colom (Valldemossa, 1997) learned "El Cant de la Sibil·la" at seven. This traditional chant has been around for centuries in Mallorca and is still transmitted from generation to generation. She owes a tremendous personal and artistic connection to her grandfather, who taught her her first song, managing to spread his passion for “tonades”: oral folk songs.

Colom moved to Barcelona at the age of 18 to commence vocal studies. During that phase, she deepened her knowledge of jazz improvisation, composition and musical production. In the meantime, she would explore Mallorca's rural communities, finding personalities that still recall popular songs to learn them and, therefore, enrich her musical background.

Julia's compositions are the culmination of this singular journey. The folkloric influence of Mallorca's “tonades” in her music is unquestionable, it being part of her musical DNA. It's linked to her personality as a songwriter, as we can appreciate in “Miramar”, a debut album comprised of both original and traditional songs, elevating it into a celebration of oral musical transmission and the many lives that songs partake.
