About this concert
Hiatus Kaiyote’s smoky, psychedelic soul and heavy funk have made them a fiercely adored live band, and a go-to sample source for Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Beyoncé and Jay-Z, and other rappers looking to bring smooth grooves to their music. On their most recent album, 2024’s Love Heart Cheat Code, the three-time Grammy nominees venture deeper into the mystic world of psych-rock without abandoning the swinging, exploratory jazz-funk at their core. The Financial Times called it “expansively romantic, alluringly weird, and irrepressibly joyous,” as well as “a party soundtrack for hazy days and hot nights.”
Since forming in Denton, Texas, in 2004, the shapeshifting collective Snarky Puppy has won five Grammys performing a uniquely personal brand of music. It’s a little bit jazz, a little bit rock, with influences from R&B and gospel and the blues, all of it played with incredible precision and visceral joy; the late David Crosby called them a “big, funky, romping, muscular jazz band.” On their latest album, 2022’s Empire Central, they reconnect with their Texas roots, paying tribute to the history of Black music in Dallas. Its fresh feeling, percolating rhythms, and ear-candy synth effects won it the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album award at the 2023 Grammys.

I recently had the pleasure of seeing Hiatus Kaiyote live again, and it was an incredible show! Compared to past performances, the sound quality at this venue was noticeably better, allowing their music to shine with even more clarity and impact. The band had the entire crowd vibing, creating such a lively, enjoyable atmosphere.
As for the venue, it was definitely a good choice for this concert; however, it did get quite warm once the place filled up. Turning up the AC in the future would definitely make the experience more comfortable for everyone. Overall, a fantastic night, and I can’t wait to see Hiatus Kaiyote again!

Their sound references a swathe of influences - electric, acoustic, futuristic, psychedelic, progressive, soothing and urgent - slipping in and out genre and defying definition. Signed to Salaam Remi’s Sony imprint Flying Buddha, the past 12 months has seen them make a rapid trajectory from share-house studios to sell out shows around the world after releasing their debut self-produced album Tawk Tomahawk. With a swag of awards in 2013 including Best Breakthrough Artist at Giles Peterson's Worldwide Awards and The Age Music Victoria Best Emerging Artist, as well as nods from soul royalty (Prince, Pharrell Williams, Erykah Badu, Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson, Common, DJ Jazzy Jeff), it was a collaboration on a new version of “Nakamarra" with A Tribe Called Quest legend Q-Tip on their re-release of Tawk Tomahawk which earned them a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance, making Australian history as the first band to be nominated for any R&B category.
