About this concert
Commissioned and produced by Pete Townshend, Fire & Dust: A Woody Guthrie Story is a captivating journey into the life of one of America’s greatest folk icons, created by celebrated singer-songwriter Reg Meuross. At this show, Reg Meuross is joined by two members of his band, The Strike—renowned multi-instrumentalists Geraint Watkins (accordion, piano) and Marion Fleetwood (strings)—to bring Guthrie’s powerful story to life through music. Adding to the magic is narration by Will Kaufman, a world expert on Woody Guthrie and author of four books about the legendary folk singer. With songs and stories that highlight Guthrie’s fight against racism, inequality, and injustice, Fire & Dust draws poignant parallels between Guthrie’s time and our present day. Townshend saw this project as drawing a direct line from Woody Guthrie through Bob Dylan to Reg Meuross, and described it as “folk music at its best.” This extraordinary performance combines Meuross’s songwriting mastery with Guthrie’s enduring legacy, creating an unforgettable evening of music, storytelling, and history.

First time we’ve ever been to a folk club! Very welcoming and some wonderful vocal / instrumental contributions from the locals prior to Reg’s performance.
Having never heard any of his work prior to this, we were committed fans by the end. First half of the set focused on his excellent new Woodie Guthrie inspired album, Fire and Dust, while the second half was a mixture of Reg’s earlier work. Poetic, powerful and thoughtful lyrics, sublime instrumentals, interesting and poignant narrative as well as witty anecdotes from his time on the road. He deserves to be far better known and we’d highly recommend anyone to catch him at future gigs. Thank you Reg and Llantrisant Folk Club for a wonderful evening!

Reg Meuross Biography
Currently touring with Fire & Dust: A Woody Guthrie Story
Reg Meuross is a true modern troubadour, representing contemporary English folk writing at its best. “There’s something special about the way he writes and delivers a song” Townes Van Zandt. In the mid-1980s Reg Meuross formed the Panic Brothers with Richard Morton, mixing Americana with humour and slick harmonies. Then came the Flamingos, Hank Wangford, and now 14 highly acclaimed solo albums have established his songs as ‘the hinges upon which swing the doors of perceptive English folk’ (Folkwords).
Reg’s songs comment bravely on life as he sees it, bringing wide ranging stories from the ghosts of WW1 soldiers to the ravages of dementia, and some of the most beautifully disarming songs and lyrics ever written. Reg has that rare gift of being able to touch people, through his songs and performance, on a really human level. His words and music paint pictures that remain with the listener long after the song has been sung.
“Meuross, quite simply, is one of the best” Malcolm Carter, Pennyblack Music
“Powerful and moving songwriting” Martin Chilton, The Telegraph
“A mighty songwriter and an equally fine singer” Martin Carthy
