Estampie Biography

There are (at least) 2 different groups using this name:

(1)Estampie is a medieval band from Germany, founded in 1985 featuring founding members Syrah (Sigrid Hausen) and Michael Popp (both also featured in the spin off band Qntal , which make similarly inspired mediaeval music but with a more electronic feel). The band took their name from a style of dancing from the Medieval era which involved lots of stomping of the feet. Estampie use an impressive amount of traditional instruments including hammered dulcimers, and all manner of woodwind and stringed instruments.
The sound of Estampie is quite varied featuring slow dirges with male/female vocals, works of almost choral intensity, and fast paced tracks. Favoured by both classical music fans and the Heavenly voices/Mitteralter scene their music can be heard everywhere from the Cathedrals to the Clubs!
Estampie have also just released a "best of" cd compiling some of their best known works.

(2) Estampie is a British early music ensemble specialising in lively secular music from the Middle Ages and Renaissance, founded in 1983. They recorded the album "Under The Greenwood Tree" for Naxos label in 1995.

(3) Estampie is named after the medieval dance estampie. It is a German music group playing primarily medieval music, with some modern influences from pop, world music and minimalist music.
