About this concert
THE SIXTEEN's 2025 Choral Pilgrimage includes Will Todd's I SHALL BE AN ANGEL OF PEACE. A programme for inner peace, combining music by Hildegard, Arvo Pärt, Will Todd and Anna Clyne. In an age of resurgent conflict and frenetic demands on our attention, our 2025 Choral Pilgrimage: Angel of Peace offers a slice of tranquillity in many forms courtesy of luminous, purifying music traversing six centuries. The enraptured songs of medieval abbess Hildegard of Bingen and the joyous large-scale Antiphons of Taverner combine with the mesmeric soundworld of Arvo Pärt, whose 90th birthday is celebrated in 2025, and the magical realm of a brand new work for choir and solo violin by composer Anna Clyne. Nine pieces of music from across the centuries speak of peace and acceptance and the ecstatic joy their reassurance can bring. This year’s tour takes its title from words by Cardinal Newman, set to music by Will Todd – ‘Let me be an angel of peace’. Newman’s meditation on the challenge of existence suggests life’s deepest valleys only help its highest mountains feel more wonderful. Perhaps, when we see that joy co-exists with sadness, we’ve been visited by our own Angel of Peace.

Will Todd Music Biography

Will Todd taught himself the piano from an early age and grew up in County Durham, North East England where his grandfather was a coal miner and his parents were teachers. His love of improvising has been the central force in a wide ranging career of composing and playing. Will has worked with many of the UK’s leading music organisations including Welsh National Opera, Opera North, The Halle Orchestra, Opera Holland Park, The Sixteen, The BBC Singers and the BBC Concert Orchestra. He has also visited many countries performing and directing his music.
His love of choral music is reflected in a large output including masses, anthems and larger sacred concert works including Mass in Blue, which has been performed hundreds of times around the world since its 2003 premiere. His carol My Lord Has Come has become a worldwide favourite since it was included in Oxford University Press’s Carols for Choirs Five in 2012. Will Todd also has an impressive list of theatre works including The Screams of Kitty Genovese, produced most recently by Tête à Tête Opera in London and Edinburgh, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland for Opera Holland Park, Migrations for Welsh National Opera and Song of our Heartland, commissioned by Opera North.
Will Todd is president of a number of UK choirs and Chair of the Durham Music Trust, supporting the work of the Durham Music Service. He strongly believes in music making for all, and his personal motto when directing choirs is ‘find the passion’. Outside music his interests include supporting the environmental movement in any way he can, and he is planning to phase out his use of flying during the next few years.
His music is published by Oxford University Press and Boosey and Hawkes and released on Signum Records.
