Le maître de jazz du NEA, Gary Bartz, est l'un des meilleurs pourvoyeurs de ce qu'il appelle la « composition informelle » (par opposition à l'improvisation) au saxophone alto depuis les années 1960, travaillant avec des sommités telles que Max Roach, Charles Mingus, Art Blakey et Miles Davis. Il a sorti plus de 45 albums solos et apparaît sur plus de 200 en tant qu'artiste invité, et a travaillé avec certains des artistes émergents du jazz d'aujourd'hui, tels que Ali Shaheed Muhammad et Adrian Younge pour leur Jazz Is Dead série et le groupe de jazz-funk Maisha.

Gary Bartz Biography
Gary Bartz (born in 1940) is an American alto and soprano saxophonist.
Since graduating from The Juilliard School he has worked with Charles Mingus, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, Max Roach, and Jackie McLean, as well as performing and recording with his own groups, among them the Ntu Troop, which combined soul, funk, african folk music, hard bop, and avant-garde jazz.
In 2005, Bartz won a Grammy for playing on McCoy Tyner's album Illuminations.
He currently teaches at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music when not touring.
