Porterfield Biography
"Difficult to categorize, easy to enjoy" (Take Effect Reviews)
Following up the 2018 debut EP Live at Q, and after two consecutive Boston Music Awards nominations for Best Jazz Artist of the Year, Jacob Aviner and his highly creative, unclassifiable unit Porterfield are proud to announce the release of Rome, their first full-length offering. On vocals, guitars and piano, Aviner unveils a set of yearning, evocative songs at the helm of a core lineup with Jared Yee (tenor sax, fx), JP Goldman (MOOG bass) and Raphael Lehnen (drums). His arranging for supplemental brass, reeds and strings, in varied combinations, heightens the music’s textural contrasts and emotional impact. His plaintive lyrics and affecting voice, strikingly clear and expressive in both middle and high registers, evokes a wide range of colors as the music crests and recedes in intensity. “There are so many moods that flit past,” offers divideandconquermusic.com, “but they rarely clash, instead coalescing into a beautiful patchwork.”
