Ulthar (US, Oakland) Since their debut 'Cosmovore' in 2018, Ulthar has become a name to reckon with, blending icy sinister black metal with heavy, dense death metal influences. In 2020, they released 'Providence,' which was well-received, but it was the dual release of 'Anthronomicon' and 'Helionomicon' last year that truly garnered attention. Deeper, more layered, and matured musically and as a band. Now they are eager to bring that live to Europe, Utrecht, dB’s Vlampijpstraat 63. Ulthar consists of vocalist/guitarist Shelby Lermo (Vastum/Extremity), bassist/vocalist Steve Peacock (Spirit Possession/Black Curse), and drummer Justin Ennis (Vale/Void Omnia). Succumb (US, San Francisco) This quartet will haunt your mind for a long time. A big pile of chaos, a punch in the gut, and a grab at your throat. Black Metal, Hardcore, Grind, Dissonant Death, it’s all in there. Vocalist Cheri has a unique sound and takes you on a journey to the abyss. Succumb started in 2014 as Cloak and continued as Succumb in 2017. Their latest album 'XXI' was very well received. Get to know this unique band.

Obrien's acoustics can be hit or miss sometimes but this show sounded great. First two bands were surprisingly good, haven't heard of Garroted or Cane Corso but came away pretty impressed. Ulthar killed it and Wake had incredible energy. Only bad part is O'Briens shows go on late so by the end of Wake's set 70% of the audience left since Boston turns you into a pumpkin if you're out after midnight. They deserved a bigger crowd.
