About this concert
British-born, Melbourne-based composer/songwriter Hana Stretton brings her unique brand of pastoral folk to the Bishops' House. Hana made her debut record Soon outside, in still moments after bushfires and wild storms had raged through her home in the Australian bush. Completely isolated with just her beloved cows and a few instruments, recording Soon became a way to digest grief alongside nature?s chorus. Likened to artists such as Grouper, Vasti Bunyan, The Microphones and Alex G, Hana's music has been played on radio by Chicagoʼs KRANKY label, Cillian Murphyʼs BBC Radio 6 Music show and Maria Somerville's NTS show to name a few. Hana has a dedicated fanbase, spread worldwide. Soon sold out of all physical records within a week of release, and Spotify has tallied over three million plays since it came out in January 2023. At live shows, you can see Hana playing classical guitar, percussion, tape loops, drone and building imaginary choirs. Soon feels like it comes into my world on, night wind and has belonged there since forever, unexpected. Phil Elverum (Mount Eerie, The Microphones) https://www.instagram.com/reel/C4Clpjhy7Qp/?hl=en Luke M de Zilva is an Australian experimental songwriter, composer and curator. Up / Bright, Bright Blue (2024) is the final third of a performance featuring cellist Peter Hollo from the inaugural Volume Festival at the Art Gallery of NSW ? a site-specific set embracing the resounding echo of the Gallery environment and responding to Hilda Rix?s landscape painting, Through the Gum Trees, Toongabbie (circa 1920). It follows on from Luke?s three performances at Dark Mofo 2023 and his recording project, Levelled (2022), created at the University of Technology?s industrial reverb chamber alongside Peter Hollo and Mara Schwerdtfeger. Levelled was named a ?best of? in 2022 by The Quietus, awarded #1 in the Wettest 100 ? the second-ever fan-voted countdown of Australian left-field music. In 2024 Luke appeared at Sydney Festival and alongside Penelope Trappes (AU/UK) in Australia. Luke's work has been praised as ?uniquely Australian? by Roy Montgomery (NZ). We recommend getting to the venue in advance of 7:45pm as the space is intimate and manoeuvring around can be difficult once the gig starts. You are welcome to bring your own liquid refreshment as we do not have a bar.
