After a 17-year hiatus from releasing new solo material, the famed rapper and Outkast member surprised fans with an album that defied expectations. Instead of the hard-hitting hip-hop anthems he was known for, "New Blue Sun" ventured into the realm of ambient and new-age music with a strong spiritual jazz influence. The album features a rich soundscape built by an ensemble of instrumentalists including flautist Benjamin, percussionist Carlos Niño, and keyboardist Surya Botofasina. Their contributions coalesce with André 3000's own explorations on the flute, creating a tapestry of sound that is both soothing and thought-provoking. The opening track, titled "I Swear, I Really Wanted to Make a 'Rap' Album but This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time," sets the tone for the album's unexpected direction. André 3000 acknowledges his initial intention while embracing the creative journey that unfolded. "New Blue Sun" isn't purely instrumental. Tracks like "Maybe" feature ethereal vocals by Mia Doi Todd, adding another layer of intrigue. The album feels improvised and organic, a testament to André 3000's description of the recording process as a journey of discovery. While the genre shift surprised many, "New Blue Sun" was met with critical acclaim. Critics praised the album's innovation and André 3000's willingness to push boundaries. They lauded the album's ability to create a meditative atmosphere, highlighting the masterful use of space and texture within the compositions. While awards haven't been announced for 2023 releases yet, "New Blue Sun" is a strong contender for accolades in categories recognizing artistic merit and adventurous music-making. Though it may not be the rap album fans anticipated, "New Blue Sun" stands as a testament to André 3000's artistry and his ability to continually evolve. The album has garnered a dedicated following who appreciate its unique soundscapes and introspective mood. Whether it receives formal recognition or not, "New Blue Sun" is sure to be remembered as a bold and captivating chapter in André 3000's illustrious career.
