Shelter Biography

Shelter is a Hare Krishna Hardcore Punk Band from New York City.
Formed by Ray Cappo of Youth of Today and originally comprising members of 76% Uncertain and Tom Capone from Beyond / Bold.

Ray Cappo (aka Ray of Today) was the vocalist for several hardcore bands. The most notable and influential among these bands was Youth of Today. Reflex From Pain, Shelter, Better Than a Thousand, and the project recording "Ray and Porcell", were the other bands/projects that he provided vocals for. This icon of New York Hardcore, was actually from Connecticut, playing drums for the Connecticut band, Violent Children. Ray was occasionally a guest DJ for a college radio station in Danbury, CT. The radio show was called "The Adventure Jukebox" mainly run by Darryl from the band No Milk On Tuesday, Spinning a large array of hardcore music on the Sunday evening program. Ray had a massive record collection and this gave him an opportunity to share some of his (much now rare) unsigned EP's, Demo Tapes and Records. In this time, Ray had an always present supportive face for local hardcore shows including many early H/C bands No Milk on Tuesday, 76% Uncertain, Seizure, End Product, Abusive Action (Many mentioned on their debut EP). before moving to NYC in the mid-1980's, Ray and his band Youth of Today already had made a dent on the scene.

Ray has been releasing powerful and inspiring music in the alternative/punk/hardcore music scene for 20 years. His life changing music and message has given him legendary status in the underground music community. What he's created has had a ripple effect that has literally created movements with dedicated followers, spin-off bands, as well as committed fanzines. He was one of the earliest proponents of clean living, spirituality and vegetarianism in a punk music scene that was not so spiritual and not so clean.

Because of this he created controversy and sparked debate where ever went. He also created loyal followers and devoted fans, who have up and changed their lives because of his heartfelt lyrics and message. At a time when kids were reaching out for some substance in life or looking for answers, Ray provided the healthy alternative. Now at age 40, he's married with a family and teaching yoga, nutrition and wellness in Los Angeles.

Living with very similar values but speaking to a completely parallel community, Ray has indulged his old fans with a lost CD. Songs he had written but had never recorded- until now. ETERNAL a new 11 song CD (Goodlife Recordings) catches more great songs that were sitting in Ray's mind but never released.

10 new songs and a remake of Quest for Certaintity the title track of his 1991 offering. Eternal delivers more inspiring lyrics. A glimpse into the brain of a guy that has influenced and bulldozed a path for so many, toured the world over (& over), released spoken words cd's, written books, created ground breaking record labels, and represented order, progression and a positive voice in a music scene that leans towards chaos.

With the help of Ken Olden on guitar (Better Than a Thousand, Damnation AD and Battery) and Dave DiCenso the drum professor who played on other Shelter classics as Mantra (Roadrunner 1996), Beyond Planet Earth (Roadrunner 1997), The Purpose the Passsion (Century Media 2001) the music becomes formidable. The entire production shines with the assistance of engineer/producer Chad J. Hughes who is an award winning Sound Designer for feature film and television. His production company Resolution Media is based in Los Angeles and is currently developing up and coming artists.

Eternal is another great chapter in Ray's career.
