Mala Nota Biography
Mala Nota is a band from Austin, Texas. The group stays true to the reputation of the eclectic local music scene with a diverse and forward-thinking sound. The band was born from an idea of Guillermo Azpeitia, who sings and plays keys. As he was busking throughout Latin America with his trusty beat-up acoustic guitar (dubbed “La Mala Nota”) he collected many incredible experiences and memories. Once back in Austin, he put together a line-up of talented musicians, giving the band a more eclectic and colorful sound. The combo released a well-received debut single, “Sucia Ley,” and immediately started drawing audiences with their live act. The song features a poignant and relevant topic, as its lyrics focus on systemic power abuse by the police, as well as corruption—two common issues found in Latin America and around the world. The song highlights Mala Nota’s unique storytelling approach. “Sucia Ley” (“Dirty Law”) comes from the perspective of a man and a woman who have experienced the cruelty and injustice of this abuse first hand. Innocent people pay, while the authorities and the government stand behind criminals. Mala Nota was performing regularly when the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic put a stop to their activities. Today, however, they’re back on track, and ready to kick off a new era with explosive live performances and a collection of songs making their debut album.
