21+Kaia Katers new album, Strange Medicine (coming May 2024 on Free Dirt Records), opens with a haunting vision. Accompanied by Aoife ODonovan, Kater sings of the women burned at the stake as witches in 17th century Salem, Massachusetts and their wish to strike back: I dreamt I moved through you and / Burned my name into your chest. Its an opening salvo from an album that celebrates the power of women and oppressed people throughout history as they rise up and turn the poison of centuries of oppression into a strange kind of medicine. Katers songs are dialogues with these historical figures and meditations on her own modern life as well. Across her 20-year career as a writer and artist, Juliet has released three albums, garnering placements on television shows on MTV and VH1 and airplay on more than 175 radio stations across the country. Kaia Kater Biography
Few are more conscious in their journey through Appalachian histories and the Canadian musical landscape than Kaia. Born in Montreal, Kaia has lived Winnipeg, Wakefield and, most recently, West Virginia, she now resides in Toronto. Her old-time banjo-picking skills, deft arrangements, and songwriting abilities have landed her in the spotlight in North America and the UK, garnering critical acclaim from outlets such as Rolling Stone, CBC Music and The Roots Music Report.
