Africa Day is the annual commemoration of the founding of the Organization of African Unity (now African Union) on May 25, 1963. It is celebrated in several countries on the African continent and around the world. Africa Day is an opportunity to celebrate African diversity and success, to highlight the cultural and economic potential on the African continent, to raise awareness around pan-African ideals, to educate the population about Africa's history, and to inspire Africans and the African diaspora to participate in thinking about the continent's future. Africa Day is an opportunity to reintroduce the dynamic, diverse continent called Africa to its people. It is also a time to reverse entrenched stereotypes of the continent by demonstrating what life is effectively like today by showcasing stories, photos and videos that show contemporary Africa and learning about the rich history of African kingdoms and culture.
