About this concert
The Silver Reserve is the solo vehicle for songwriter Matthew Sturgess whose
beautifully crafted songs take their time to mesmerise, sooth, jolt and
enchant. Beauty, darkness, hope, and joy are carefully observed in
lyrics that celebrate the detail of living, and feel instantly
recognisable and authentic. Melody and harmony thrive in delicate guitar
driven arrangements and complex soundscapes. A performance finds you
holding your breath. It?s music that gets into your bones.
A 2017 album release (a more band orientated affair) has given way to
solo recording and the latest single ?Slow TV? showcases a more intimate
approach. Recent performances with critically-acclaimed artists such as
Willy Mason, Thea Gilmore and The Waeve are cementing a formidable live
reputation and more releases are expected over the coming months.
?Weaving a melancholy and fiercely personal web of honest, beautiful
dark-folk, often using loops and effects to create a patient, hypnotic
drama that is entirely immersive.? The Velvet Sheep
"I really love Matthew's work. His music has always been gorgeous but
live he's better than ever. The Brudenell show was pretty much a
masterclass on every level." Thomas White (The Waeve, The Electric Soft
Parade) on opening set for The Waeve in Leeds.
"I have fallen in love with The Silver Reserve. Songs of warmth and
beauty that scratch at the inside of your heart. In a world that sits
heavy on your chest, this is music that reminds you how to breathe.'
Thea Gilmore (Cooking Vinyl)
"Beautiful, fragmentary songs which slowly dismantle you." Seamus
Fogarty (Domino Records/Fence Collective)
?Blending emotive, affecting lyrics and spacious delicately crafted
guitar work, these beguiling songs hold a depth of hidden treasures.? ?
Marc Walton (Seven Arts)
"Quietly spellbinding." - Andy Brown (Soundlab)
"Incredible talent?everything he played begged to be listened to." -
Bill Adamson (Hint of Mayhem)
"Quirky and haunting." - Ed Harrington (Leeds Living)

Robbie Thompson is a songwriter based in Sheffield, UK producing work
that wanders between the personal, the psychological and the
philosophical. Some of his songs exist as explicit explorations and
reflections upon personal experience - often prodding at broader, more
existential questions along the way; some as guided tours through
surrealist imagery and motif, inviting the listener to co-create
narrative and meaning through interpretation; some more simply as
descriptive still frames of introspective moments. Thompson?s vocals
have been described as striking and are a defining feature throughout,
alongside lyricism that has been likened to Cohen - who is clearly a
strong influence.
'The poetry of Robbie Thompson is the sort that can stop you in your
tracks. His rasping, croaking voice is at times almost atonal, always
richly textured and expressive. His words, drawing on his background and
interests in psychotherapy and philosophy, offer generous reflections
and insight on his accumulated experiences.' - Pink Wafer
?Robbie fervently considers life with depth and compassion, and strives
to authentically communicate his musings through song.? - Pigeon Hands
?Think Leonard Cohen meets Richard Hawley.? - Fresh On The Net
?Utterly beautiful.? - BBC Introducing
?Textured, exploratory and magnetically inconclusive.? - NowThen
Magazine
