About this concert
Twenty years ago, Tim Garland launched his Lighthouse Trio – a truly unique and formidable acoustic band where interplay is paramount. 2024 sees the 20th anniversary of this international trio that features pianist Gwilym Simcock and drummer & percussionist Asaf Sirkis. "At the forefront of contemporary music without borders." (All About Jazz) Garland’s association with the prodigiously talented and much-praised Simcock goes back a long way. Both share a broadly similar musical approach that’s informed by a blend of fusion, folk, and classical forms, while the formidable Sirkis, a drummer and percussionist with a well-deserved reputation as one of the best in the business, seems at home in any environment, but here masterfully employs a bespoke kit of Middle Eastern frame drums perfect for the setting. The trio’s three albums (If the Sea Replied, Libra and Lighthouse) capture their stunning agility and lyrical sensibility, with both Garland, whose seventeen year association with Chick Corea made his name widespread, and the now-world-renowned Simcock (Pat Metheny Band) sharing compositional input. This very special and unique concert by the trio will feature an audiovisual element, with a works from a project entitled ’Moment Of Departure’, created by Turkish painter and printmaker Esra Kizir Gokcen. Artworks will be displayed in the foyer as well as screened within the concert hall itself, creating a stunning backdrop to complement the live performance. Tim and Esra will also preface the show with a talk, starting at 7pm, about the project and how the musical and artist processes fed of each other during its creation.

“Sure footed virtuosity….a dazzling standard.” - The Times “Formidable and devastatingly creative.” - The Guardian “His level of genius is rare.” - Chick Corea “Garland plays each of his three horns as though it were his main axe, grabbing your attention with limber phrasing and a centred tone that projects both gravitas and fire.” - Downbeat (4 and a half stars) “A world-class virtuoso.” - BBC Music Magazine “Garland is quietly, but quickly becoming one of the most important British jazz musicians in years.” - Jazzwise Londoner Tim Garland has had an international career for many years now, touring with the likes of Joe Locke/Geoffrey Keezer (as “Storms/Nocturnes”), Bill Bruford, the globe-trotting trio Lighthouse, (for which he won a BBC award in 2006) and has continued playing and recording with Chick Corea since joining Origin in 2000. He won a Grammy for his part (orchestrations) in the creation of Chick’s The New Crystal Silence CD and is well known as a composer, having fulfilled commissions for the LSO, CBSO, Northern Sinfonia, BBC Concert Orchestra and others, including NYJO, that featured his new big band commission in a televised Albert Hall Prom in the summer of 2012.
