About this concert
Welcome return to Scarborough after his great show in 2022. Jeffery Straker grew up taking piano lessons in small-town Saskatchewan and has gone on to perform over 100 shows per year across Canada, Europe and Latin America. The rootsy-storytelling of his songs has the power to transport a listener ? out onto a lake in Canada?s North or to the main street of a prairie town. A clever lyricist with an energetic piano style, his song writing has drawn critical comparisons to the likes of Harry Chapin, Kris Kristofferson , Murray McLauchlan & Billy Joel, while maintaining a style distinctly his own. He?s recorded his music for CBC radio?s ?Canada Live?, has seen his songs used in film, TV and theatrical productions and in 2020 and 2021 was awarded ?Roots/Folk Artist of the Year? at the Saskatchewan Music Awards. In 2019 he received his first Western Canadian Music Award. The Saskatchewan Country Music Awards have named him ?Keyboard Player of the Year? 3 years running.

Jeffery Straker Biography

Jeffery Straker is a roots/folk singer-songwriter pianist in Saskatchewan Canada. He grew up taking piano lessons in a small farming town, raised by a church organist mother and an auctioneer father. He’s gone on to perform over 100 shows per year across Canada, Europe and Latin America. Serving up a rootsy-storytelling brand of song, his song-writing has the ability to transport a listener - out onto a northern lake or to the main street of a prairie town. Across 8 albums to date critical comparisons have been drawn to the likes of Harry Chapin, Kris Kristofferson, & Carole King while performances have seen him live on BBC radio in the UK, on theatre stages and performing to festival crowds. Named 'Roots-Folk Artist of the Year' in consecutive Saskatchewan Music Awards Jeffery has also been honoured with a Western Canadian Music Award. The Saskatchewan Country Music Awards have named him keyboard player of the year 3 years running. Last year he toured 10 shows across the UK (including the Canadian High Commission in London) with return invitations from festivals and venues alike. His songs and performances connect with audiences and to that end CBC Radio recently said: “Straker has a way of drawing us into his world and making us feel like we’re a welcome guest; an old friend he’s ready to catch up with”.

Jeffery’s latest single ‘Brand New Light’ (Nov 2024) is rooted in new love.
“I fell in love 3 months into the pandemic with my partner Michael and we’re still going strong. This new single is a 2-step about new love helping me see the world differently.” Produced by ace Roots-Folk producer Steve Dawson (also on guitars) at “The Henhouse” in Nashville TN, it was recorded live off the floor lending to the authentic feel of the arrangement. Fiddle & dobro shine on this track. This release signals the americana-roots sound of Jeffery’s upcoming 10-song album (Spring 2024).
