About this concert
To truly understand Bonnie Bishop, you need to experience her music live. Everything else is just bullet points. She was raised between Texas and Mississippi, where she worked on the sidelines of Mississippi State football alongside her stepdad, legendary football coach Jackie Sherrill. After graduating from the University of Texas with a degree in sociology, Bonnie put a band together and got her start on the Texas music scene. She learned the value of being an underdog and fighting for a dream by booking her own shows and traveling from town to town, promoting her records at regional radio, releasing three independent albums between 2002 and 2008 (“Long Way Home, “Soft To The Touch,” and “Things I Know.”) in 2007, she signed a publishing deal with Writer’s Den Music and moved to Nashville to pursue bigger dreams. There she had songs cut by her musical hero, Bonnie Raitt, including “Not Cause I Wanted To,” a co-write with NRBQ’s Al Anderson for which Raitt won a Grammy in 2012. “The Best Songs Come From Broken Hearts,” a single off her 2012 independent album “Free,” was also featured in the hit TV show “Nashville” and voted one of the Top Ten Best Songs of the Year by the New York Times (Jon Pareles.) Then in 2015, she signed her first record deal with Thirty Tigers and went into the studio with multi-Grammy winning producer Dave Cobb to make “Ain’t Who I Was,” released the following year. However, Bonnie was feeling the call towards a new dream. She returned to her native Texas shortly thereafter, where she continued to tour and make her living as a singer-songwriter while also earning her master’s degree in creative writing from Sewanee University of the South. Over the next few years, she would work towards a lifelong goal of writing a book about growing up in the limelight and having a famous college football coach for a father figure (or infamous, depending who you were rooting for.) In 2019, she sought out drummer Steve Jordan to produce her sixth studio album, “The Walk,” which American Songwriter called “40 of the most poignant, stirring minutes you’re likely to hear this year.” During the pandemic, Bonnie moved to the Hill Country outside Austin and worked as a private chef while also teaching a course in creativity based on Julia Cameron’s The Artist’s Way, a book that greatly inspired her own artistic journey. As the world was coming back to life in the summer of 2021, she reconnected with one of her musical heroes, Irish singer-songwriter Foy Vance, and the two began touring together and collaborating on Bonnie’s forthcoming studio album “What If None Of This Is Real?” Two years and ten songs later, they returned to Nashville to record with Anderson East in the engineer’s chair and Foy playing the part of the producer (and every instrument on the record.) The album is set to release Fall 2024. In the meantime, Bonnie resides in Blanco, Texas with her chihuahua where she feeds too many stray cats, writes books, makes art, teaches creativity, and marvels at the fact that no matter how many times she tries to give up on music, it always calls her home.

Bonnie Bishop Biography
BONNIE BISHOP’S EIGHTH ALBUM,
THE WALK
PRODUCED BY STEVE JORDAN (ROBERT CRAY, BUDDY GUY)
U.S. Release: OCT 4 2019
FORT WORTH, Texas — “I’ve always felt like there was a much higher purpose to my musical message,” says Bonnie Bishop. “I wanted to recapture that connection with this album.”
The singer-songwriter’s new album, The Walk, released on October 25, 2019 via Thirty Tigers, furthers the journey of self-discovery she began with her 2016 release Ain’t Who I Was, which drew critical acclaim from The New York Times, Rolling Stone, and NPR.
The new set of seven emotionally charged songs, produced by Grammy-winner Steve Jordan (Robert Cray, Jon Mayer, Buddy Guy), connects listeners with the Texas vocal powerhouse in her most honest effort to date. She’s dedicated the lively confessional “to all who wander.”
From the album’s torrid opener, “Love Revolution,” to the euphoric closer “Song Don’t Fail Me Now,” The Walk demonstrates a heartfelt testament that music can absolutely heal the spirit. It’s a fearless, funny, insightful Bishop we encounter on a path that found her moving from Nashville back to her native Texas, writing an album that captures a seasoned singer/songwriter rediscovering her passion and musical purpose. It’s a liberating collection of songs she calls her “breakaway.” “The words are from my soul and the music keeps my feet moving,” says Bonnie. “For that I am most grateful.”
Framing each of the album’s songs in one-word definitions (such as PURPOSE for “Love Revolution,” and DOUBT for the moving title track), Bonnie captures life’s contradictions and conflicts with an unblinking, no-holding-back approach. Jordan’s groove-laden production completes the compact she made with herself to flourish outside of her comfort zone. “I always wanted to work with him,” she says. “I knew he was perfect for this project because I knew he would create lively beats that made deeper songs like this connect on an upbeat level, as well. I was taking a journey into the unknown and he was there with me every step of the way.”
Bishop began playing original music in dive bars and honky-tonks across her native Texas after graduating from the University of Texas with a degree in Sociology. She moved to Nashville in 2008, sharpening her songwriting chops with writers Mike Reid, Jimmy Wallace, Al Anderson among others. Her big break came when Bonnie Raitt recorded a song she and Anderson wrote entitled “Not Cause I Wanted To,” helping snag a Grammy for Best Americana Album in 2013. In all, Bishop has recorded eight albums, rising though the country/Americana ranks and receiving various awards for her songwriting. A few years ago she decided to take a hiatus from the stress of the music business and enrolled in Sewanee University of the South, where she is currently working toward a master’s degree in creative writing.
In 2016, Thirty Tigers convinced her to record a new album with producer David Cobb, the universally acclaimed Ain’t Who I Was, which brought her back with a splash and showcased the more soulful side of the dynamic singer.
Bonnie also dedicates herself to a cause that “walks the walk” when it comes to turning music into redemptive, life-changing transformation for others, and calls her work with Songwriting With Soldiers the most fulfilling part of her life as a songwriter. This non-profit organization pairs professional songwriters with veterans and active duty military, using collaborative songwriting to build creativity, connections, and strengths. Bonnie recently performed some of the songs she has written with veterans as part of a Songwriting With Soldiers PBS concert at Nashville’s War Memorial Auditorium, which aired this Fall and continues to run on U.S. public access.
