Raising Ravens Biography

Raising Ravens was conceived by powerhouse Australian singer/guitarist Jess Finlayson in 2020 and grew into a musical nebula over the following years of mayhem and chaos. Kicking off with debut single ‘Careful What You Wish For’, Raising Ravens has continued to grow in intensity with multiple singles and film clips, plus an EP, and continued to grow in intensity with the 3rd single ‘It’s A Trap’ hitting Number 1 in the AMRAP Metro Airplay Charts and staying in the Top 10 for 4 consecutive weeks, along with being added to playlists around the world including USA, UK, Canada, Egypt & Brazil.

Debut EP ‘In My Room’ had two showings in the AIR Top 10 Single Charts – hitting Number 6 on the Independent Label chart alongside the likes of Tones & I, Masked Wolf and Ruel; and at Number 4 on the 100% Independent chart amidst Vance Joy, Casey Barnes & The Teskey Brothers - a massive achievement for a DIY release and a testament to Finlayson’s hard work and tenacity.

Raising Ravens came to the attention of national broadcaster ABC with recent single ‘Vexed’ being added to rotation on Double J and appearing on several Top 10s for 2022 releases.

Raising Ravens debut full-length album ‘Leaving With The Halflight’ (out 31 March 2023) was recorded over a 3-year period of time, dodging lockdowns and all manner of storms, embracing the ambiguous nature of the dark and light aspects of life and rock and roll. Including contributions from some of Jess’s favourite musical comrades, Raising Ravens has become more of a collective than one singular entity and continues to evolve.

Choosing to remain completely independent and not resting on her laurels through lockdowns, Jess launched her own label Interloper Records in 2021 with all Raising Ravens releases being released through a platform owned and run by the artist.

Starting out as the lead guitarist for legendary female hard-rock renegades Nitocris (1992- 2001), followed by the infamous Fyreflyes, Jess Finlayson has been touring nationally and internationally, writing and recording since the age of 15. More recently being the founding member, lead singer/guitarist for The Mis-Made who are currently on hiatus, the focus has been on recording a Raising Ravens full-length album.

A hard-hitting rock-based project, Raising Ravens focuses on topics that tend to be swept under the carpet or ignored and touches on subjects relating to worldwide and personally experienced abuses of power and the effects those abuses have on those who are at its mercy. Working alongside long-standing friend and producer, Lachlan Mitchell, Raising Ravens have managed to pull together a vast body of eclectic work with both national and international tours on the immediate horizon. There may even be an album number two in the works. You just never know.

"Finlayson has been a massive presence on the Australian hard rock circuit for a number of years and now, with Raising Ravens, has found her niche once more. Dirty old school rock that instantly takes you back to your angst-ridden youth".
