A cello prodigy who won First Prize at the Rostropovich International Cello Competition at just 11 years old, she switched to conducting at 24 and has electrified audiences ever since. Who better to conduct a performance of Richard Strauss's tone poem for cello and orchestra, Don Quixote? Most enjoyable, especially coming from someone who usually goes to rock concerts. Adding Schindlers List as a bonus track was a treat. Gemma New was dynamic as the conductor,a refreshing change from the usual elderly gentlemen, who you usually see.Anne Sophie Mutter was great too. Only negative, although the performance of the violin concerto had quality,we felt it went a bit too long. But bravo!
