Every time San Joses Mortuous sneak a doom passage into their thunderous death metal assault, it feels like watching a closer known for his 100-mph heat suddenly throw a knuckleball. The band will be blasting away, full speed ahead, when a side door opens and a weepy My Dying Bride violin melody slinks out; or a suffocating vortex of sound will momentarily dissipate to let a plaintive, funereal riff slip through. Its high-wire stuff, and Mortuous make it look easy.Upon Desolation, the bands second album, is thrillingly difficult to pin down. Incantation and Autopsy revolutionized death metal in its wild early days by cross-pollinating it with doom, but the former were mostly concerned with making it sound inhuman and evil, while the latter hitched it to a punkish groove. Mortuous are clear disciples of those bands when working in their death metal guise, but the way they incorporate doom elements into their sound has more in common with the elegance of the Peaceville Three, or early Katatonia. The combination of gracefulness, groove, and sheer heaviness that the band achieves on Upon Desolation is rare. Since forming in northeast Tennessee in 2014, southeast death metal titans CEMETERY FILTH have undergone several evolutions and relocated to the capital of the south; Atlanta, Ga. CEMETERY FILTH have spawned a variety of releases while working with their past label Unspeakable Axe Records, including 2020's debut full-length, Dominion.
The album, against its unfortunate release date at the start of a pandemic, quickly made waves in the underground and resulted in positive reviews around the globe. Dominion is still heralded as a unique and unforgotten release, championing its strength in ear-catching songwriting and almost veteran approach at crafting quality death metal in a modern world where death metal releases sit in abundance.
Now comprised of lead guitarist Ryan Guinn, bassist Evie Austin, drummer Tristan Payne, and lead guitarist/vocalist Maddie Kilpatrick, CEMETERY FILTH have entered a new era showcasing that perfected form of pure death metal songwriting mixed with new elements and a creative way of incorporating technicality without taxing the ears of listeners.
